Is Yahoo! Mail officially dead letter (extinct) with PaleMoon?

Post by gospelmidi » 2025-10-18, 22:11

Yahoo! Mail has not been working for me or others on PaleMoon 33.9.0.1
and Windows 10 x64 for the last few weeks. Y!M hangs after entering the
username and password.

It's a little bit wonky, but it works for me. After entering the password, I get this below. But once I click the "Next" button, I'm in.

Clicking your link just opens Yahoo mail for me. The reason for this is because I have all Yahoo login cookies protected.
Because of this I'm automatically logged in.

I couldn't log into Yahoo Mail either, so I made an add-on ( Yahoo Login with Firefox Cookies ) that works on the same principle as the "Bypass Cloudflare with Firefox Cookies" add-on:

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=32098

With this add-on, you will be able to login to Yahoo Mail with a single click on the 'Open "Yahoo Mail - Inbox" width "Backup Browser" Cookies' add-on option. You can delete Yahoo cookies because they will be saved in "prefs.js" file and will be reloaded in Pale Moon when needed.

To activate this feature, you must first perform several operations, as follows:

You must initialize the add-on by right-click on button (see screenshots) to save the paths to the Firefox app and the "cookies.sqlite" file (belonging to Firefox) in Pale Moon's "prefs.js" file.

After initialization, use the options in the list that opens when you click on the add-on button, in the sequence in which they appear in the list (see screenshots).

Important! After making a Yahoo Login in Firefox and opening the Yahoo Mail page, you should close Firefox without doing "Sign Out" from Yahoo Mail, then copy the Yahoo Login Cookies from Firefox to Pale Moon (see screenshots).

Now you can open the "Yahoo Mail - Inbox" page in Pale Moon by clicking on the last entry in the list that opens when you click on the button.

Important! Do not make "Sign Out" from "Yahoo Mail" in Pale Moon, either. Just close the Yahoo Mail page and delete the cookies belonging to Yahoo.

Screenshots:

Note: I don't know yet how long the cookies remain valid, because I made this add-on yesterday. Today (after one day) they haven't expired yet and I was able to login to Yahoo Mail with a simple click on the 'Open "Yahoo Mail - Inbox" width "Backup Browser" Cookies' option.

When cookies expire, you must login to Yahoo Mail in Firefox again, then copy (again) the new cookies to Pale Moon.

I confirm this. You should complain to Yahoo first and foremost. I will. (unless it's something specific with 33.9.0.1 ?)

Not that I use them anymore, but I have an old account which I'm not deleting because they are supposedly recycling usernames? :wtf:

I haven't quit Yahoo Mail either, but for a different reason: nostalgia. Many years ago, it was the first email service I ever used.
Today, I also use Proton Mail and Gmail.

ron_1,
I get to the same "Next" box,
download/file.php?id=20376/Untitled.jpg
but when I click "Next", the circle spins until I close the page. Worse than wonky.

In case it helps anyone, Yahoo Mail still works fine in Epyrus (Palemoon's sister email client) with an App password. I prefer it that way as I don't get any ads :D .

When it comes to webmail, I have always been very weary about having third party ads displayed in the same page as your mail content. Those ads are inevitably served via external scripting and it's not outside the realm of possibilities that ad providers can get access to your email content.
There is also a non-zero chance that email itself can contain active scripting when viewing in webmail. I never use webmail for those reasons unless I have no other access, and don't use "free" email services when I do. Paying a small amount each year for an essential service to get something without these risks is well worth it, but of course you can do you ;)

I've made the add-on "Yahoo Login with Firefox Cookies 1.2" six days ago and the cookies are still valid, so I decided to add a layer of security to the cookies saved in the "prefs.js" file (cookies that contain the information needed to access the Yahoo Mail page). Thus, I created a new add-on ("Yahoo Login with Encrypted Firefox Cookies") in which I encrypted the cookies saved in "prefs.js" file. In this new add-on, a password is required both to encrypt and to decrypt cookies. All other functions are identical to those in the previous add-on (in which cookies were saved in the "prefs.js" file without being encrypted).

The password must be the same for both encryption and decryption (and it is recommended to be a strong one). This password does not have to be the same as the one used to login to Yahoo Mail and has the advantage that it is not a problem if it is forgotten, because in this situation the cookies can be retrieved again from Firefox and encrypted again with a new password.

***

I took the code used for encryption from the page "Secure Text Encryption and Decryption with Vanilla JavaScript":

https://dev.to/eddiegulay/secure-text-encryption-and-decryption-with-vanilla-javascript-1c23

I modified the code slightly, to obtain strings after encryption and to use strings as input in decryption (format required in "prefs.js" file).

Hi

as a new user of Pale moon I just came across your Yahoo-add-on. - I'm running Pale Moon on Mac Os Lion. - I need to point to a backup browser app. - What is it? Where can I find this tool for Mac OS? thank you, raphael

My add-on is for Windows and Linux.

I'm sorry, but I've never used Mac OS, so I don't know anything about file path format on Mac systems, and therefore I don't know the paths to the backup browser app and to the backup browser's cookie database file. Therefore, I don't know (either) what syntax these should have in JavaScript.

It uses forward slashes just like Linux. Though you'll have to ask dbsoft (the Mac build maintainer) for specific paths to the profile etc.

If you mean backing up the profile with a Mac, I do that manually. The pathname is: ~/Library/Application Support/Pale Moon/Profiles/[name of profile]. I actually back up the folder with the name of the application to get the name of it on the backup.
