fastmail.com has weird text and layout

Post by jarsealer » 2025-10-10, 14:31

The page text looks to be in the wrong places (scroll down the page also).

Also tested on a clean profile, had the same results. No errors in console showed

So, is this a problem with the website or browser not sending the right HTTP response?

It's a problem with UXP not supporting clamp (among other things I didn't look at); the filter modifies the CSS to remove clamp, letting the style mostly work.

clamp() is part of "CSS4" of which none of the modules have even reached Recommendation (i.e. Standard) status in the W3C yet. Websites shouldn't be requiring it... So it's definitely a problem with the website. :coffee:

Sadly, W3C doesn't control internet standards anymore. They've ceded control to google's WHATWG: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5?use ... G_conflict

"The W3C ceded authority over the HTML and DOM standards to WHATWG on 28 May 2019, as it considered that having two standards is harmful.[45][46][47][4] The HTML Living Standard is now authoritative."

WHATWG has control over, as you quoted, just HTML and DOM. The CSS Working Group which develops and maintains the CSS standards are definitely still under W3C. The "living standard" doesn't apply to style sheets (yet). https://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/

Ah, ok, thanks. I was under the assumption that CSS was part of X/HTML 4/5.
