Cannot log in to paypal, com with password PM 32.1-01

Unread post by sindi » 2023-03-23, 00:32

Bionic 32 on a 2005 HP laptop. 2GB RAM.

Attempted with latest PM (32-1.01) and with previous versions to log in to paypal with password and nothing happens. (Phone text does work).
Error console shows three errors and about 20 warnings. XML Parsing Error - no root element found. two ReferenceError: Event is not defined.

In addition Yadlee verification does not work, says my partner, when checking financial records for the first transfer to family or friends. It eventually times out. I do not know the URL and my partner is dyslexic.

Safari on iPhone 11 works at the site with password.

On the phone, my partner says he could not log in with his email just with his phone number.

That would be the global window.event, but to the best of my knowledge, PayPal does not try to use that (btw deprecated by everyone)

I use PayPal on a nearly daily basis and it works just fine with a password.

We don't even have versions that run on phones so... not sure exactly what you're trying to use.

A lot more information required. Start with giving us the exact errors from the console please, and also include the output of help->troubleshooting information.

She might mean the first beta version of v32·1.
We don't even have versions that run on phones so... not sure exactly what you're trying to use.
Some versions of PayPal let the user log in (also on desktop) with one’s telephone number instead of an email address. That she cannot log in with that, and cannot log in on other devices with unrelated browsers, suggest that her PayPal account is simply misconfigured.

Puppy Linux Bionic32 bionic32-dv5000 4.9.163-lxpup-32-pae
Compatible with Ubuntu 18 add-ons.

dv5000 is an HP DV5000 from 2005 or 2006. PAE 2GB RAM PC2700. Bionic32 also works in non-PAE laptops with 1GB RAM.
I use 2003-6 laptops because they have non-glare screens and I cannot easily read the shiny screens and do not want to have a monitor plugged into the laptop.

I went yesterday to Palemoon Download, Stephen Pusser's site, and chose Ubuntu 18 palemoon_32.1.0-1.gtk2.i386.deb which I manually 'grabbed'. I downloaded it to my hard drive and used Rox-Filer file manager and a mouse to install it.

I restarted Pale Moon (32.1.0-1 gtk2 32-bit for Ubuntu 18).

Today (again):

I type paypal.com, wait for page to load and click on Login.

I get a page with choices of log in with code sent to my smartphone or to use password instead. THIS IS WHERE THINGS STOP WORKING.

https://www.paypal.com/signin#

I click on 'log in with a password instead' and it sits there trying to download from https://www.paypal.com..... Nothing else happens.

I just removed Pentadactyl add-on, which was already disabled due to compatibility problems. It makes no difference.

I then click on Pale Moon (upper left), Developer Tools, Error Console. Today there is ONE error not three, the Root error. I do not know how to copy an error console. So I had retyped the message in my report yesterday.

The standard Pale Moon version on a 64-bit Bionic64 Puppy Linux appears to work. I am not the one who uses it. It worked for me today.

I am hoping to send a wedding gift and do not want to be forced to have a smartphone (which I leave turned off 99% of the time) to log in to paypal. What setting might I have changed which causes Error message at Paypal Login?

The US PayPal works for me in Pusser’s current Debian 10 package with WebAssembly disabled. Do you have problems logging into PayPal with a new profile? Try creating one (through about:profiles) and visiting PayPal through it. If it works, then you can send your wedding gift in time while we try to diagnose your main profile’s problem.

I tried with and without web assembly.
I made a 'new' profile for Palemoon and started it with palemoon -p new .
I still cannot log in with password. But now I have a spotless new profile to play with.

In the meantime I logged in using the code texted to my smartphone and attempted to send money and it eventually failed.
I wrote the intended recipient, who has not used his account for ages, to check if it still works.

That you can access PayPal on your mobile suggests it is not a problem with your account, belying my first guess. Our ability to access PayPal through Pale Moon suggests it is not a browser defect (really, a defect in PayPal for breaking web standards). This leads me to think it is somehow a problem with your computer, perhaps from store or bandwidth limits. I have two further tests for you:
  • What happens in a task manager (System Monitor or the like) when you try to log into PayPal and fail? Is most of your 2 GB store in use? Is the upload or download pattern odd?
  • Does PayPal work in another browser on your computer? If you have LibreOffice, I assume that you have at least one of Konqueror, Epiphany, Firefox or Chrome installed: try in this other browser.

"That you can access PayPal on your mobile suggests it is not a problem with your account, belying my first guess."

My iPhone 6 has no browsers that will log into Paypal. (At least not with password).
My partner's 'new' iPhone 11 Pro logged in with Safari.

The other browser running on my Bionic32 GTK2 laptop is Seamonkey 2.53.9. Newer standard versions need GTK3 and I have GTK2.
Latest version is 2.53.16. Maybe some linux distribution supports GTK2.

I don't know where to find System Monitor. I looked all over the menus.
When I fail to log in with a password, my memory usage is under 1GB. "top".
My Xfinity download speed is about 28MBps.

I will investigate the other four browsers. I do not use LibreOffice. I am running short on space. I will look for deletables.

I just spent at least an hour trying to follow instructions. I greatly appreciate the support and apologize for my ignorance.

Ignorance is no evil in itself. You are polite.

Which application do you use to tell you are using no more than a gigabyte store? I use GNOME System Monitor, which allows me in the same tab to watch how many bytes are uploaded or downloaded at any time. There are other ways to do this, but knowing your task manager and desktop environment (Xfce, Cinnamon, GNOME, MATE…) would help.

top - lists all the things that are running and how much RAM and CPU they use.
Window Manager is XFCE. I could change it to something else equally small.

At paypal login page, with my dv5000 laptop:
352944 used, 873728 buff/cache, 0 swap. (I should probably add swap).

361104 used when I try to log in with a password. The login page shows Email and Next, which, after I click on Login, takes me to the page with Password. There I try to enter Password. it gets stuck.

My partner's 64-bit BionicPuppy64 has a different login page, showing Email and Password and Login together. His computer (desktop) is running Compton and mine is not. (I probably turned it off to save RAM). When he logs in, top shows memory use is 560MB. 524KB swap used.
After logging out, 620MB used. 2GB swap space (turned on).

This is clearly not a store problem. I assume, as you have been able to check the CPU usage at the same time, that your CPU has not throttled or seen most of its available power in use. Please correct me if this is false. Incidentally, how has PayPal fared in other browsers on your computer?

Xfce has its own network monitor. I suspect that the iPhone could access PayPal as it is using a mobile network, while something is wrong with your computer’s wireless signal. (These can be maddening.) If your signal is strong, and other web sites load while PayPal does not, I am puzzled, but can try to think of other causes.

The dv5000 is NOT 64-bit capable.
Celeron M 1.46GHz.
I can try this experiment on another 32-bit laptop.

My 2003 Gateway 200ARC from 2003, with 1GB RAM (can take 2GB PC2100 or PC2700) acts the same so it is not the hardware or the wireless signal.

Gateway CPU Pentium M 1.4 GHz. Wired connection. (The HP port is flaky so I use wireless there). This Puppy was set up independent ly and still has the previous PM. I do not have another working browser on either laptop. Seamonkey is out of date and acts the same as PM latest.

Maestro, do you want to try 32-bit Palemoon on your newer hardware?

This machine is from 2012. It is closer to your hardware than the present day’s. ;)
I doubt I can try it: 32-bit Pale Moon has not been released as a tarball for years, and I already use one of Pusser’s builds for my regular installation. Virtual machines would be promising, but the last time I had tried one on Linux had somehow ignited a smouldering fire that culminated 1½ years later in my upgrade manager rebelling and forcing me to reinstall the OS.

I have had about ten versions of Puppy Linux on one laptop with no problems. Each has its own directory. I can try a fresh Bionic32 on a 'new' laptop some day. The HP dv5000 is just temporary because it was already tested. I used to sell obsolete computers for a local charity. My DELL B130 previous laptop lost its USB controller and keyboard controller (I can plug in a keyboard) and the Gateway (with RTC memory replaced) is a bit slow. I have a lovely 2004 DELL 9100 space heater to try next, with 2GB (!) total memory (purchased and added). $4800 new. Came with dead hard drive.

One observation: logging in to PayPal does not have a split user name and password screen normally. it has both in a single form.
So i'm thinking you may be presented with a specific login procedure that is not standard.

e.g., my payPal login when going to https://www.paypal.com/signin/ is as attached.

I get the split screen as in the attachment, not a single form, with the address you have given. I had suspected this might have to do with user agent, but the page appears the same for me whether in native (my usual) or Firefox-compatible mode.

Thank you both for the screenshots. My partner's 64-bit screen looks the same (in English).
Today he reports that his 64-bit PM 32.1.0 cannot do the Search at Dashboard, the button under Send Again. Nothing happens when he clicks.

I am unable to send a large amount of money after logging in with PM (Puppy Linux) using the code sent to my phone.
$1 got sent okay. I turned on the swap file (3G). 'Log in to use your bank today' produces a circle chasing its tail. Then Done but still chasing its tail. PM uses 43.2% of my 2G RAM. (Perhaps swap is not really being used?).

I will set up 32 and 62 bit versions of Puppy Bionic on a 64-bit laptop.
