Dictionary.com website fails to work on Pale Moon for the first time

Unread post by Pallid Planetoid » 2022-09-23, 20:21

Dictionary.com has always worked using Pale Moon (over all the many years I've used Pale Moon) until just recently.

Now the word entered disappears from the "search box" and the requested word fails to render anywhere on the page.

Tested on Pale Moon using "safe-mode" (tested on Firefox using "new private window").

Pale Moon (the requested word does not display scrolling down the entire page):
The requested word disappears from the search box and the word fails to display on the page.
The requested word disappears from the search box and the word fails to display on the page.
Firefox:
The requested word displays as expected and remains displayed in the search box.

Only one (console) error occurs:

Not only that search bar but no regular button seems to work in the page. I read in this forum before a similar circumstance of bad code being used in the website because "it works in Chrome this way" but the website totally escaped my mind; I believe MC Straver himself posted it with a handy illustration on it.

Regardless, my simple attachment shows which ones are clickable in green and the ones that aren't but should work in red. The "Done" in status bar is shown as I was highlighting w/ the mouse cursor the "LEARN" header
It also leads to blank pages in the sidebar
I didn't screenshot

This website (as I previously mentioned but w/out specifics) has been working (seamlessly) in Pale Moon for the past very nearly 7 entire years!! Why now all of a sudden? :problem: (it is probably the most widely used website on the Internet for getting word definitions)

Ask the webmasters! (I also shot them a message from the contact form through Edge)

^ Done! (used Pale Moon to do this - which appears to have worked as I got a "Thanks for contacting us! We will get in touch with you shortly." response on the page after submitting).

So I take it the one console error does not offer any clue as to what the issue might be? (I assumed this to be the case as you've not commented on it, so I didn't include the error in my submission)

Yes... agree the input word disappears from the "search box" when accessing site via https://www.dictionary.com/ link.

However, using the 'Dictionary.com' search plugin I made a while ago everything still seems to work normally... which is odd? :? (Recommend using plugin with the 'Context Search X' Addon which offers all your installed search plugins from right-click menu.)

I can highlight a word on a webpage, right-click, and select the 'Dictionary.com' search plugin... and word definition appears normally. I can then change the original word entered into Dictionary.com's search box to a different word... and the new word's definition will be shown, etc.

This appears to be because the search plugin uses 'https://www.dictionary.com/browse/' before the input word... but if this address is saved as a bookmark when opened the address reverts to 'https://www.dictionary.com/'... and will not work? Hopefully someone here with more coding expertise than me can explain why?

--------------------

As a workaround you could install my Dictionary.com search plugin attached below.
Alternatively, try billmcct's Dictionary.com search plugin posted here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28787&p=231717#p231662

Add the .xml file to your Pale Moon by adding to the 'searchplugins' folder in your Pale Moon profile. Add the .xml file and then restart Pale Moon. Using the plugin via the 'Context Search X' addon is very easy. (If there is another recommended or preferred way to add external search plugin .xml files to the browser please advise! :?: )

Dictionary.com Support, Sep 26, 2022, 13:18 PDT:
Hi Mick,

Thanks for your note.

After an important release last week, our engineering team did have a follow-up bug- a known issue last week across many browsers (not specific to pale moon) on our two homepages. They were able to release an update to that last Friday, which has improved the search and search results click experience. We aren't certain whether that accounts for the issue you experienced or not, but if you would please clear the cache and history on your browser, then try Dictionary.com or Thesaurus.com again?

That said, if that doesn't sort out your issue, Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com's team outline that our sites are best used on the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge browsers. We don't commit that the sites will properly function on other browsers; the sites will be in an as-is state on other browsers with no expectation of resolution to issues that affect the site on other browsers.

Thanks for using Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com.

Take care,

It's now back to the SAME THING!! --- website doesn't work in Pale Moon once again! (however does work in other browsers - confirmed in regards to FF).

Where do I "uncheck" the resolved status? :problem:

Same checkmark (but might not be available on all board once solved since a good number are restricted to moderators for un-solving, so I did it for you)

SyntaxError: invalid identity escape in regular expression

Not helpful but might be worth to mention that the site works in a Firefox 56 fork so it's not something recently introduced by Google.
