Ikea saying PM is old

Unread post by Giraffe » 2022-06-27, 11:14

Ikea: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?q=pillows on a search shows:

"You are using an old version of your browser and will get fewer features. Please update to get all the features of our site."

This happens even with PM Portable 'clean' - i.e. no changes at all other than the home page.
Obviously the latest PM isn't 'old'!

You could first try overiding the browser user agent specifically for Ikea's site and see how it goes.

Such a message should be worded, "You are using a non-chromyized browser and some of the bells and whistles we think we need may (probably) won't work. In fact, the display of our site may not even render correctly."

I get such a message on a site or two that I visit somewhat regularly. I just accept the notice and the site works just fine for me. Maybe it doesn't offer me all the 'extras', but I don't even notice I guess.

@Giraffe
The message may refer to some features used by the site which Pale Moon doesn't support (yet).

@hujan86
Overriding the browser UA won't make unsupported features work by magic.

But it -is- the most likely cause for this error.
IKEA likely simply thinks we're an old version of Firefox, and nags the users about it "just in case"

That's a different error

I was simply talking about the error users -see-
And that is likely based on UA sniffing. If they did proper feature detection, then it wouldn't simply throw.

In this case it's definitively no UA sniffing, hence my note to hujan86.

When I tried it gave me an error message "oops, something went wrong" and the rest a blank page, then I allowed all in eMatrix and reloaded, and as far as I can see everything works now, browsed through the site some and apparently it all works...It's Magic!

I don't use eMatrix and uBlock is off for Ikea.
Some of the selections options seem to be unavailable.

@gepus

I thought the OP simply wanted to get rid of that annoying message, since there was no complaint about the website not working on PM in the first post.

Well, as some facilities are said to be missing but, obviously I don't know which, I can't tell if it's working properly. The info. sidebar for each item is a bit unintuitive at first and does weird things sometimes, but whether or not that's 'broken' I don't know.

I never did get an "Old Browser" message, just the error as stated above. FWIW I include a screenshot of the eMatrix allowed screen...my best guess is the polyfill
But just a guess, I never touched UBO, but as you can see it's blocking 19 and the eMatrix icon shows 1 block though the list is all green? idk.
Hopefully this might help some in finding the problem.

Looks like injecting Custom Elements isn't sufficient to get the search page to render completely. User agent doesn't matter. You have to check how it appears in updated Chromium / Firefox to see how it's supposed to look.

Seems to be OK in Vivaldi and FF ESR, but I can't see any difference! Might be something further down, eg in ordering etc. Not too worried for now as I don't order on line from Ikea as the delivery charge is ridiculous.

The author of Pale Moon Web Technologies Polyfill Add-On did some workarounds, but says the experience is not so good even with them applied due to lack of certain CSS features. He also points out an error TypeError: Function.prototype.toString called on incompatible object (relevant issue).

Apparently using the function that way used to be forbidden, but other browsers allow it now.

Thanks for that. It looks complex and doesn't work too well, so I'll put up with Ikea being awkward and use another browser only if necessary.

Works just fine here with :
- User Agent set to Native
- Pale Moon 31.1.0 (64-bit)
- Kubuntu 20.04 LTS
- Pale Moon GTK2 Repo from Steve Pusser

Maybe they fixed something in the meantime ?!
