Can't log in to ovoenergy.com

Unread post by jqsid4 » 2022-06-06, 15:54

Operating system: Windows 7 Pro
Browser version: 31.0.0
32-bit or 64-bit?: 64
Problem URL: www.ovoenergy.com
Theme: Default
Installed add-ons:
Installed plugins: (about:plugins)

I can access all areas of the OVO Energy website. My last successful login was 24th May, no other website is affected and I can login using the latest version of Firefox Portable,

Now when I try to login I get an error message "This is taking Longer than usual. Please make sure your browser is up tp date and then try again". This problem still occurs on a freshly downloaded Portable PM31 and in Safe Mode.
OVO.jpg
I've been using Pale Moon for a few years and love it, I do hope there's something I can do to use it on OVO Energy and would be very grateful for any help, thank you.

What is Pale Moon's "User agent mode" set at in the "Compatibility" setting? (in Preference>Advanced tab -- see if alternate settings might help).

If no help there - you could try adding a UserAgent Override for the URL (login page) in about:config.

@jqsid4
The less information you give, the less chances for meaningful answers.

Do you get the login screen?
Can you enter your credentials?
What errors does the Browser Console throw?

I did test and everything worked fine except for the returning message that my username or password is wrong (no wonder since I don't have an account there).

Thank you both.

I have tried without success:
- Various versions of PM and Portable, new profiles, Safe Modes.
- The three compatability options (it's usually set to Firefox)
- Useragent overrides as follows:
general.useragent.override.ovoenergy.com Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:99.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.9
general.useragent.override.ovoenergy.com Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:96.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/96.0
general.useragent.override.ovoenergy.com Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:97.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/97.0
I should say that I really don't know what I'm doing with these, I copied and pasted them from suggestions given on other queries on this board. I know how to create the string in about:config but I don't fully understand what I should enter.
- Switching the router off for 10 minutes
- Flushing the DNS cache and doing tracert in cmd.exe, which returned times of 6 or 7 ms, if that is the right expression, these as instructed over the phone by a friendly computer guy who doesn't use or know Pale Moon.

Yes I do get the login screen and can enter my credentials. I'm afraid I don't know what is meant by the Browser Console or where to look for that or the errors there. The only error message I see is the one as in my picture a few seconds after I enter my OVO password and press Enter. There's nothing else to click on the page where it says it's taking longer than usual etc.

As I say, I can login just fine on a newly downloaded Firefox Portable run from an external drive but I dislike that browser intensely and would be so happy if I can find a fix for PM.

I appreciate your trying to help me, thank you.

You will find both the "Browser Console" and the "Error Console" using the browser menu and going to "Tools" > "Developer Tools" or you can get to these two Consoles by clicking on the Pale Moon button in the upper-left corner of the browser and selecting "Developer Tools" from that menu.

Be sure to clear all errors in the Console you use and then load the website to test.
Post (using copy/paste) any relevant results from the Consoles (i.e. errors that occur when the Website fails to work properly) and post the results in your post in this topic. Please remember to use the "Code display" function when posting (the icon that looks like "</>" in the list of icons, 5th from the left, just above the text box you use to enter comments in the forum) -- especially if there are a lot of errors.

I have tried without success:
- Various versions of PM and Portable, new profiles, Safe Modes.
So to confirm - running an (installed) current version of Pale Moon in "Safe-Mode" did not help and neither did creating a "fresh" new Profile for the same (installed) Pale Moon help either?

Thank you for the explanation.
This is the Browser Console results:
Thanks for providing the details. In the case of web compatibility, using the "web console" instead of the browser/error consoles tends to be better since it will not include entries for the browser itself (like extension messages and what not) making it easier to filter out what's not relevant.

2 errors immediately stand out:
  • Error: ReferenceError: event is not defined
One of the libraries in use on the website apparently still uses a "global" event which is an ambiguous property that is neither supported nor encouraged to be used. See also the big red warning on MDN: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... ndow/event
  • Error: TypeError: Intl.Locale is not a constructor
The website assumes (without checking) we have support for querying the browser locale and errors out on any browser that has it disabled or doesn't support it, because the site doesn't check if the feature exists before trying to use it. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do at the moment to work around this. Implementing this API is on our to-do list but currently unknown when it will be implemented.

Thank you Moonchild.

Does this mean that there's nothing I can do/tweak to log in on PM? Odd that I've been able to log in until very recenly, they must have changed something in the last couple of weeks.

If there isn't a current workaround I'll have to administer my account on FF then for the time being and keep trying periodically on PM. I haven't used FF since version 47. I'll have to try to kill their telemetry and some of their other nonsense that I''ll never use.

until very recenly, they must have changed something in the last couple of weeks.
They probably did. maybe they updated one of the libs they rely onw or what not and that has stopped being browser-agnostic.

You could also try to contact the webmaster and relay your experiences. Maybe they are amenable to look into this and to roll back an update they did to something that works on Pale Moon. Can't hurt to ask, eh?
