Using the firefox UA

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:100.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/100.0
for a page in Pale Moon I can access it as before. This test if a browser is what he tells what he is is ridiculous.
After seeing this, I just did a quick check using steamdb.info as the test site, and I can confirm that setting a site-specific user-agent override of that has allowed it to get through.

general.useragent.override.steamdb.info
Just tried the above code for Fanfiction.net. With a tiny tweak, it worked!

The Pale Moon community rocks!

general.useragent.override.fanfiction.net

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/100.0
Then I shall name you Tinúviel Beria uin Morchaint, which means 'Daughter of Twilight protecting from the Shadows' in Elvish.

Tried the override as well and first it didn't work.
But after restarting Pale Moon in safe mode it worked.

So I guess they are checking more things than only the user agent?

Worked for me without restarting Pale Moon at all.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm on Windows though, so if you did so in Linux I don't know if it would have been able to detect that and decide it didn't match up.

Must be an addon or something in my heavily customized browser then. :)

I just tried that UA override with Skidbin.net, and it's not working.

Cloudflare made some changes lately. I tested yesterday masking Pale Moon as Firefox 91 and it didn't work while it works now.

Works for me masking as Firefox 91.

I used the corresponding Linux user agent. ;)

All non-functioning sites have started working again without any configuration changes, so yay!

Hello, i've been lurking this thread since yesterday, just decided to create an account. No fix works for me, using useragent override doesn't work, and i see now people are saying it works for them without touching anything but it doesn't for me; i tried in both Steamdb.info and Fanfiction.net and the Cloudflare "checking your browser" just keeps looping. I deleted cookies, restarted browser in safe mode, nothing.

Still not working for me. Tried all of the UA strings listed above. Tried changing the User Agent mode (Native/Firefox compatibility). Nothing allowed me to access any of the sites set more restrictive in Cloudflare. Some sites gave me a captcha before they started looping, others just looped. This is all with a brand new completely clean browser profile.

Either their changes are slow to roll out or they've maliciously set restrictions on my IP blocks. Both seem equally plausible to me.

Anon, where are you using the UA strings?

This unfortunately is not a universal fix. It will have to go in your About:Config on a site-by-site basis and I did find that I was forced to tweak the original UA string to make it work for Fanfiction.net.

Sample format:
general.useragent.override.fanfiction.net (name of the About:Config Setting - you'll probably have to add a new one)
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/100.0 (value of the new About:Config Setting)

Even then, the sites will 'only' revert to the original behavior. For Fanfiction.net, that means captchas galore, but at least it won't be endless redirects.

I had About:Config open in one tab and Fanfiction.net open in the other. Pale Moon actually has several pre-existing User Agent Overrides, so you might be able to tweak things by looking at the other Overrides. Just keep tryin' till it works.

And once again I can confirm it not working again too.

I can understand Cloudflare can have its uses, but as time goes on it seems like it ends up acting like an intrusive DRM punishing legitimate users more than those it's actually meant to guard against.

This is starting to feel personal.

Yesterday, the User Agent fixed worked. Today, CloudFlare's gone back to the endless redirects, no matter what User Agent Override I put in.

Anyone else having the same issue?

EDIT: At least Dissenter is working. I'd much prefer Pale Moon, but at least Dissenter offers some privacy/security.

Just tested with and without useragent overrides. No luck, getting endless redirects.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the CloudFlare folks are watching this thread like a hawk. How else does a workaround break within a day?

The User Agent override is essentially mimicking Firefox's and I've confirmed that Firefox itself has no problem reaching Fanfiction.net. That means they must've added some additional check to ensure that Firefox wouldn't be affected, but other browsers, like Pale Moon, would be.

I've been using Dissenter for sites that currently don't play nice with Pale Moon, but it infuriates me that I have to do it for a site that works perfectly with Pale Moon, except for that [expletive deleted] CloudFlare!

And blocking people from reporting a legitimate issue? Talk about a Big Tech style strong-arming.

I'm doubtful it will do anything, but I did report this issue to Fanfiction.net. Just stinks that CloudFlare will probably get away with this, just because they're the bully with a big stick on the Internet playground...

This is being discussed on the ghacks.net website. Waterfox and earlier versions of Firefox are also being affected with the infinite redirects now. Looks like it's a big Cloudflare foul-up.

C'mon people, Cloudflare's blocking is not an UserAgent issue.
Don't let you get fooled because it worked for a very short time with an override.
They do feature detection (for fingerprinting). Their routine is probably optimized for the Chrome-engine.
So everything using that engine will pass.
Firefox may pass or may not pass, depending on some of those features available or not.
