Unable to use Discord.

Unread post by Daikun » 2022-04-02, 03:58

I'm struggling with a strange issue where I'm unable to use the text field for chatting in Discord. It's completely greyed out.

Image

I'm able to use it just fine with Microsoft Edge, but PM has the text bar completely disabled. Is anyone else having this issue with Discord?

I'm using PM 29.4.5.1, so I'm unsure if there's any difference with that or PM 30.
I tried enabling WebComponents and that made no difference. I also cleared all my cookies, and even deleted my account and set up a new one. No changes.
EDIT: Spoofing the useragent (which I've tried a few times) didn't work, either.

Console error that probably generates this:
TypeError: r.setBaseAndExtent is not a function
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... eAndExtent
bug #1321623
Can confirm Pale Moon 29.4.5.1 doesn't have this function.

That's in the pipeline for re-implementation.

I'm currently using the Discord app as a fallback until this issue gets resolved.
If anyone else has this issue, I recommend doing the same.

I recommend using the Discord desktop application if you have the resources to do so, anyway. It is ultimately what their service targets. The web interface (in any browser) will be limited.

And now discord just crashes after selecting a channel...
Anyway, found the official announcement
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/ar ... t-Text-Box
As a workaround, for now disabling the rich editor seems to restore chat and doesn't make discord crash anymore.
under app settings -> text & images -> use slash commands and preview emojis, mentions and markdown syntax as you type

It worked! Thank you so much, Lurker!
EDIT: Discord also seems to work a lot faster and more stable with this option turned off. I remember Discord running pretty slow in PM even before the chat box broke. I wonder why they would introduce an experimental, buggy feature that basically kneecaps the service for a good chunk of its userbase?

Because "it works in Chrome" and "looks cool".
I'm pretty sure they didn't write their own rich editor from scratch, and could just choose to use a different one, as well, if they so wished.

Even the dev only make the Discord app electron (chrome wrapper), they don't even bother to make proper apps (at least PWA, which uses service workers so the app can work offline)
Debian 12 Bookworm - KDE Plasma 5.27
Intel Celeron N5100 - 4 gigs of RAM - 256 gigs of SSD

I can barely speak english, so bear that in mind when talking to me

Traditional desktop apps are dead - everything from messengers to video conferencing to streaming, just offer an Electron wrapper around their website and call it a day.

There's a client called ripcord that's not electron based: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/

I've never used discord or ripcord, so not endorsing it. But it does exist.

As if nobody knows.
Discord anti-abuse staff member comments on the issue. TL:DR while it's technically against ToS, they don't go out of the way to ban 3rd party clients - they care much more about blocking suspicious API usage and (self-)bots; and if you honestly just use 3rd party client - you can appeal for unban, which with good enough probability will be granted.

Off-topic:
This is also why the addons team discourages forking of old addons that target third party online services - even if the extension itself is open source, you may not have the right to access the service in an unsupported manner, quite apart from the race to keep it current as they keep breaking things with new changes or that the API in question may vanish altogether.

I know there is also a Pidgin extension to turn it into a Discord client. I do not know how robust it is or whether it can access one’s past messages, and would be curious to learn.

Discord now started to use bigint's with the number xxxn (n at the end) notation that throws "SyntaxError: identifier starts immediately after numeric literal", RIP

Yes, because a chat program really needs ridiculously large integers for what it does.

Yes same here, only a blank page when trying to go to discord website. I'm using pale moon ver. 31 (latest) and W10. Just to confirm.
