Very high CPU useage on YouTube (often, not always)

Post by KlarkKentThe3rd » 2021-01-14, 09:15

This is not a new topic, but I wanted to do something about the >100% CPU when watching YouTube (especially with longer videos, especially with chat replay). Is there a way to see what is going on during such annoying moments? I tried Browser Console while watching a new short video, and this what I got:

Code: Select all

I force quitted PM, so nothing is going over 100% right now, but maybe this is a start? (would be pretty stupid if this error is something unrelated)

I know that it may just be my old laptop being an old laptop, but perhaps something can still be done...... or maybe not. I am using 28.17.0 Mac community build.

The error is thrown by Pure URL, but unlikely to be causing 100% CPU, I think? Best ask the extension author though.

Btw Edge currently has issues with live chat and video playing at the same time. There is something up with the chat part that creates a huge bottleneck for the engine it is explicitly targeted to run on.

So until they fix their shitty live chat for them selves what hope do you think there is for us? Hiding the chat is the only way for playback not to be fucked across the board.

Now if it is playback issues regardless of live chat/chat replay.. Check your hardware acceleration.

I believe my hardware acceleration was always on....... and yes, it was. Do you think disabling it may help at all?

But is it working? It explicitly says "when available".

If it is indeed working, with YT videos open, or even for minutes after, CPU is over 100. I will disable acceleration and post if there are any improvements.

No.... Not what I asked you or asked you to do.

See Troubleshooting to check if your Hardware Acceleration is actually working. But even if it IS there is obviously still something wrong with Youtube live/replay chat as it fucks shit up on Blink.

Well shoot my dog and call me Sally......... all those long LONG months of suffering, and it was HARDWARE ACCELERATION NOT WORKING that caused my CPU to choke on code?!?

I have not been this surprised in a long while.

I will take what I can get. And perhaps my computer is just so shit that moment you ask it to do anything slightly more advanced than opening a file it pukes all over itself. Fine Apple craftsmanship, beautiful hardware!

You can try and force it on.

The browser is literally allergic to my hardware, so when acceleration is "working" it only makes things worse. This is what I just found out.

BTW, the UI interface flickering bug is back, but I will happily accept this over CPU working 120%.

Pure URL sometimes chokes on large URLs, not related to CPU usage. One would expect hardware acceleration to be the first thing to look at if you're facing video playback problems!

It's funny how reality contradicts common sense sometimes 8-)

Well then, I guess you need to download a better video card.

Might not be an option for poor Klark
Fine Apple craftsmanship, beautiful hardware!
So, there's a few options:
  • Stop using Apple hardware of debatable age and make
  • Use a different browser that plays nice with your hardware

I will indeed download a better computer as soon as I can. The path to software freedom is a struggle, and I will continue to struggle with PM, since I happen to like it enough.
