a way to spoof the whole browser useragent?
It's explained in Release notes to v28.17.0 (2020-12-18) (see "Implementation notes").

You must create a new string preference for the override: network.http.useragent.global_override
- plus browser restart.

Ok.. I am rather sure YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD not to directly edit a preferences file. Hell, it even SAYS not to IN THE FILE.

SO WHY ARE YOU DOING IT?!
Just back off! I'm not editing a preferences file! I added to to my user.js file, Sheesh!

I responded in my Dec. 11 post that PNC was suddenly working fine on my desktop. I was not sure why, other than perhaps there was a delayed response to the cookies I removed.

As of today, it is still working fine. I usually log in every day or so, even if I don't need to, just to make sure it everything functions.

Thanks coffeebreak. I honestly overlooked that in the release notes. As a matter of fact, I may have missed reading the current relese notes altogether. I've been very busy lately.

Unfortunately, PNC still knows that I'm using Pale Moon! Your suggestion spoofed the general useragent leaving no trace of Pale Moon in the check. I thought this may work, but to no avail. Firefux is what I'll use for PNC, at least for now.

I read your post a while back and wondered why you were having problems. My PNC was working fine until a couple of days ago. Maybe PNC is slowly rolling out browser blocking.

A global override must be temporary and makes only sense for testing purposes!
Adding a global override to your user.js file is plain stupid to say the least...

You need to read the whole thread. I just wanted a separate profile for my online banking with the global override. My regular browsing profile would have no override in place. Needless to say, the global override didn't work.

A separate profile used only for your online banking doesn't need an user.js file to begin with.

For me, it's just a quick and simple way to do it.

I have always had PM set to Firefox Compatibility. It seems that changing it to Gecko Compatibility allows me to log into PNC Bank. Is it OK to leave PM set to Gecko? If I should return it to Firefox, it there a setting I can use to have it use Gecko for PNC without having to switch the browser configuration every time?

You could try Gecko Compatibility Mode's user agent in a site specific user agent override (SSUAO) for pnc.com...?

Code: Select all

general.useragent.override.pnc.com

Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/4.7 PaleMoon/28.17.0

Thanks coffeebreak. It's for working now. I'll give it some time to see if it keeps working.

You can see from the UA string that it has information that will change with each release.

If in future you want to keep the string in this override up to date, while the entire browser is in Gecko Mode copy the updated global user agent string from where it displays on either about: or about:support .

Well, that didn't last long. When I tried to login to PNC this morning, I got the flag. Switching to Gecko doesn't work now either. This all seems extremely random. I can't reproduce it consistently. I've worn out my keyboard trying just about everything to no avail. I don't have much hair left. I guess I'll just have to live with it. I'll have to use Firefox, shucks.

Here is what I have been using. It has worked since Dec. 11.

general.useragent.override.www.onlinebanking.pnc.com Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:82.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/82.0.2 (Pale Moon)

Thanks, 1210_bex. It won't hurt to try. I have nothing to lose! I'll give it a go and see what comes of it. It's so random that it may take a while to see if it works consistently.

If this doesn't work, I think I'll try a Chrome useragent.

Well, everything was going fine until today. I went to logon to PNC and the dreaded warning bar got me again. I also tried a Chrome useragent without success. I had to use Firefox. I guess I'm stuck.

Sorry to hear that. I assume you have tried this, but I had to delete all of the cookies multiple times before anything stuck.

Also, have you checked your PNC settings on the Permissions Manager? I have Blocked PNC from storing Passwords, but I do allow it to Store Cookies and Site Data.

This may have been mentioned in one of your earlier messages, but have you tried running Pale Moon in Safe Mode?

Yes, I've deleted so many cookies that I could have opened a bakery! In my permissions, passwords, cookies and site data are allowed. I don't have PM store my passwords. I login manually every time. I have a new clean profile created just for PNC without any add-ons except Stylem and Profile Switcher. Stylem is used just for some minor UI customizations.

This is a crazy problem. It will work for a few days, then stop working, then it lets me login again, etc., etc. The problem is totally random.

Maybe you should vent your frustration to PNC bank employees instead of here.
