Coinbase.com oddity: invisible font!

Unread post by KlarkKentThe3rd » 2020-07-27, 05:20

Coinbase, the website for cryptocurrency receiving, sending, converting, etc. that I use, now has a new bug with 28.11.0

After logging in, pretty much all options/words are invisible, though everything otherwise works (hovering over an option tells you where you'll go).

This is all the logging I can show, but perhaps it is enough:

Code: Select all

Content Security Policy: Directive ‘child-src’ has been deprecated. Please use directive ‘worker-src’ to control workers, or directive ‘frame-src’ to control frames respectively.

Coinbase.com is working fine on my system, also using Pale Moon 28.11.0 (64-bit).

I am using the Mac community build, and may or may not be just unlucky with this case.

Also, clearly the website's font cannot be loaded.

Regressed to 28.10.0 (Mac build), the invisible font issue is still there, so it's on their end. Clearly their font is not loading properly.

FWIW, Coinbase is rendering properly for me.

At this time, I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.11.0 running in 64 bit linux Mint 20 (Ulyana) Xfce. The only extensions I use are NoSquint and uBlock Origin with UBO enabled for the site.

I tried disabling nMatrix and Ublock and that did not work.

Confirmed, I created an account yesterday and I have the same problem on Linux. There is just one message in the web console that says

Code: Select all

11:06:09.112 [bugsnag] Loaded! 1 vendors~app-e19388d9ab6d76d7a104.chunk.js:2:151388
and the toolkit error console shows

Code: Select all

I hope your account will get used. Actually, when anyone pays you, tell them to send crypto if they can. Crypto is fun.

Sigh. I wish I'd gotten started when Bitcoin was new. There are stories of people having several of them back before it exploded and spending it on ordering pizza online.

Actually, when anyone pays you, tell them to send crypto if they can. Crypto is fun.
Crypto was fun, for a while. But it's gotten too big to be fun and too biased to use.
  • Crypto markets are extremely volatile. If you think investing in any cryptocurrency is smart, think again. You are almost certain to end up with significant losses, no matter what coin you choose. You can get lucky, of course, but those few are a vast minority. Exchanges also regularly get "hacked" meaning they can vanish overnight with all your crypto with it.
  • The ever-present problem of "hard forks" because one party gained too much hashing power and abusing any blockchain's vulnerability when that happens.
  • Crypto fees rise disproportionally when the value of a coin goes up. So when you do make a profit, cashing out is problematic.
  • Having done quite a bit with crypto I am familiar with mining and the general requirements for it. And i have to seriously wonder about the impact on the environment it has.
Basically in any but a third-world country where electricity is dirt-cheap, you can be lucky to break even with the crypto you get from your electricity used. All that electricity is converted to heat for finding "proofs" and we're talking about 2kW for the larger unit each. Great if you can use your miner to heat your apartment if it's really cold but otherwise not very good for the environment.
And there are huge farms of these miners out there that do nothing but crunch random numbers, converting all that electricity into heat to blow out into the atmosphere
So aside from the obvious risks on the finances side, I can't really support cryptocurrency anymore because it's contributing to the destruction of our planet for virtual currency that can be worthless overnight.

Only if they were GPU-based -- most of the crypto farms are using ASICs and can't be used for anything else.

And this is the single most important reason (other being Tulips) why I haven't looked at the coin currency seriously. I wanted to invest in this a few years ago but when saw the implementation details, I decided to stay away from it.

Okay, this is interesting enough to mention. Coinbase fixed itself in front of my own eyes. It was broken (again), and I was logging in the errors, when I pressed CMND+Q instead of CMND+W to close the browser console, quitting the browser. After reopening Pale Moon, the font was no longer invisible, and everything was working fine.

So yeah, magically the problem solved itself in real time.

or rather, with a browser restart... which also may have involved an update to 28.15.0? ;-)

It is still invisible for me after logging in :(

Updated to 28.15, Linux Mint 20, using default Firefox compatibility, the only thing blocked is googletagmanager and the console just says [bugsnag]: Loaded!

So if you use the devtools inspector and inspect the invisible text, is there any hint in the css rules why it would be invisible? Is the text still there just not viewable, or is the text actually not rendered at all (content missing)?

I don't know much about CSS, but it looks okay. The text is present but not visible, and the CSS for button class doesn't seem to have anything suspicious -

Image

The green box on the side is a button and supposed to have the text 'Add payment method' like so -

Code: Select all

<button type="green" class="Button__Container-opcph8-0 doMOde ButtonCTA__Container-z3x01-0 gaREaI"><span class="Button__Content-opcph8-1 cnRbMa">Add payment method</span></button>
As usual, they're using buttons as containers

Small thing to add, the site was broken even after the PM update, but a quit+reopen somehow fixed everything. I did mess with PureURL (checked and unchecked "intercept requests), but in the end I had everything just as I started with, yet the Coinbase was somehow fixed.

I don't know what they are aiming for there but it looks extremely mobile-centric and everything is misaligned, so likely they are heavily relying on rendering quirks on mobile browsers.
