Youtube Being Extremely Slow

Post by Keybored » 2020-07-20, 20:40

I've updated Pale Moon to the newest version, but with this awful new YouTube design that's been recently forced onto all users is making YouTube on my browser come to a crawl. I'm not sure why this is, and it locks up my browser each time I visit the site for at least 5-6 seconds. If anyone has any advice for me, I'd be glad to take it. Thanks. :|

The reason is the new shitty polymer interface of YouTube. It is also not possible anymore to get back the old one.
It also happens on other people's computers, like mine (AMD Ryzen).
It is not your computer, it is YT's WebComponents in combination with non-chromium browsers.

YouTube also works correctly on Firefox with Quantum under the hood. Apparently, don't need Blink ATM, knock on wood.

Use Invidious (https://www.invidio.us/), which allows you to access YouTube content much more comfortably.

Hope that helps.

Has nothing to do with Quantum, and everything to do with Google WebComponents which Firefox has invested in. They are also served Polymer v2 which is more performant (but which hard-requires said Google WebComponents)

For Firefox there is an extension that allows you to use the old design, without the polymer :sick: .
There's only two little scripts. Can someone collect the same for PaleMoon?

These are web extensions and won't ever work on Pale Moon or Basilisk unless you can find a version made before 2017 which you won't in this case.

This kind of stuff is better suited to a user script like this one, that works with Greasemonkey or Guerilla Scripting.

We could rewrite and make extension for PM.
I would try to do it first in CustomButtons, there seems to be everything clear ...
except this: browser.webRequest.onBeforeSendHeaders.addListener(......);

Code: Select all

browser.webRequest.onBeforeSendHeaders.addListener(handler_headers,
	{ urls: ["*://*.youtube.com/*"], types: ["main_frame"] },
	["blocking", "requestHeaders"]);

browser.webRequest.onBeforeRequest.addListener(handler_request,
	{ urls: ["https://www.youtube.com/*"], types: ["main_frame"] },
	["blocking"]);
This kind of stuff is better suited to a user script like this one,
Loads mobile design, which is not much better.

Just underscores the fact that there is nothing you can do other than grin and bear it or use a browser made by Google for sites owned by Google. Site specific extensions and scripts are a fool's errand anyway, even more so with Google where the site is always a moving target from week to week

Google owns YouTube and Google has done away with (no longer exists) the old classic YT interface. The new YT interface is reality. But some of you people "just cannot get past this point".

So, since the old classic YT interface is gone, how can you write an extension for something that no longer exists?

Just to re-iterate.The old layout is going or gone so any futile attempts to resurrect will end in a flatline.
Let's give up on it now and put it to bed.

I now tried it on the PC in my grandpa's house, a Pentium 4 670 machine with Ubuntu LXDE 20.04 and Intel i915.
I disabled Hardware acceleration and YT was usable with low resolution and new Polymer design.

Code: Select all

It's a shame. It's like they want me to ban YouTube.....
They don't want to ban you from YT, they want you to use Chrome.

Like they'd care about one person leaving over browser incompatibility when the sheeple using Chrome wouldn't even realize there was such a thing called WebComponents or that it was causing problems. :coffee:

I'm on PM 28.10 and I experience no slowness of youtube. I could watch 4K video without major problems. The video is smooth but other parts of the browser could lag. Resizing the video from full screen back to normal size also lagged a bit. But overall the experience is good for me.

p/s: if you didn't turn Hardware acceleration on, please turn it on now to make youtube happy.

I experienced that disabled HW acceleration is not a problem, even on an old ass Pentium 4.

Do you watch 4K video? I found without HW acceleration on, the video quality is lower and lagging.

The P4 can't handle that and at home my internet connection is too slow.
I tried 360p on the Pentium 4.
