Hcaptcha fails to embed in Wikipedia when editing pages without an account

Post by Mæstro » 2025-12-07, 00:30

I discovered this problem upon trying to submit an edit to a Wikipedia page. Sometime within the last dozen years, Wikipedia has implemented Hcaptcha, which is activated if a user without an account attempts to submit an article revision which includes external links. In Ungoogled Chromium 104, which shows the intended behaviour (and therefore enabled me to submit my edit), a loading circle appears briefly before Hcaptcha renders as it ought. In a fresh Pale Moon 33·9·1 profile, as well as in Basilisk 2025.07.04 (and Epiphany 3·32, the circle and captcha fail to appear, making it impossible to submit the edit through these browsers. A Hcaptcha test works properly in Pale Moon. Please note if you intend to replicate the bug that Wikipedia only permits one failed attempt to submit edits by a given IP address without an account every ten minutes.
Life is a fever dream Mæstro would enjoy.
