www.mail.com gives 406 Not Acceptable error

Post by j_ds_au » 2025-12-02, 05:47

Trying to access www.mail.com gives the following error message :

Not Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 406 Not Acceptable error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Code: Select all

Nothing is shown in the Developer Tools Web Console

Sounds like their webmaster is blocking Pale Moon.
If that's the case it is usually possible to work around (if the block is user-agent based) with a site-specific user-agent override, but the real solution would of course be if mail.com stops blocking Pale Moon

I doubt that it is a user-agent problem. I tried with a fake Windows Chrome UA and got the same result.

Ditto.
I tried, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/128.0 SeaMonkey/2.53.23, & still nonsense from www.mail.com.

Then, in SeaMonkey, (where www.mail.com does load, normally) I changed SM's UA to, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/6.8 Firefox/128.0 PaleMoon/33.9.0, & www.mail.com still loaded as expected.

(As it was, yesterday, mail.yahoo.com forced a new "agreement" on me, & after that my no-javascript version was "upgraded" to their upgrade version, which is utter trash, *and*, still did not work, fully, *and* ran like utter crap, literally taking minutes to open a mail message - if it opened at all.

At some point in the day, many hours later, all returned back to normal, & my no-javascript version was back working as expected.)

Looks like they are choking on Pale Moon's "accept" header. 406 tends to be thrown in that case. Maybe another case of having acceptable video formats for navigation requests?
