Unable to play MP3s hosted on Megaphone.fm

Post by Daikun » 2025-11-18, 06:05

Whenever I try to play a podcast that is hosted on Megaphone.fm, every audio file in the RSS feed is listed as having a file size of "0 bytes." When I try to click on it, I get the "Video format or MIME type is not supported" error message.

Here's a sample RSS feed: https://feeds.megaphone.fm/SBP1894546852

Likewise, when I try to do "Save Page As" while on the MP3 itself, it also loads an empty file with 0 bytes. However, when I try any other browser, the MP3s work just fine.
Other podcast hosts (i.e. Libsyn) will play MP3s just fine on PM, yet Megaphone specifically has this issue.

Any idea how to fix this conundrum?

You've made 475 posts so far so you're not exactly a newcomer, and still don't bother to add any troubleshooting info in the template that's right there in the new post textbox?
Any MP3 from the sample link plays and gets saved fine here.

Most other people in this forum ignore it when they post. Why are you singling me out?
Also, why do you have to be a jerk about it?

You're not being singled out. Anyone with a decent amount of time under their belt should know what info we need to be able to help you. And we get on people's cases all the time about it when they ignore it. We do, however, have a bit more flexibility for new users who might not be familiar with how we tend to work here. You aren't.
In fact, the response given is expected and is actually treating you like everyone else, so the antithesis of being singled out :geek:

If you want us to help you, you have to help us help you. We can't know your environment if you don't show us. "I already posted it x times/x time ago" also doesn't help because configurations change.
The template is there for a reason, I put time and effort into setting that up. Please don't ignore it.

The feed works just fine. it shows 0 bytes because it's not a direct link, but when clicked it will open it.
Why is this? Because it hops through no less than 5 redirects on different domains before it actually plays.

If that doesn't work for you, it may be because you are using certain extensions, settings or what not; which we can't help you with if we don't have the information needed, further underlining why we ask for it from anyone.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

We asked you for troubleshooting info, not the error console output. They're different things.

Okay, because when I start a new thread here, it explicitly states this:
Please try to include any relevant output from the Toolkit Error Console or the Developer Tools Web Console using the following procedure:
I figured that's what I needed, but I guess not. Alright... (Also, trying the Web Console turned up blank.)
Anyway, I edited my post again. Hopefully, it's correct now?

FWIW, I clicked on five podcasts and they all played for me without any problems.

At this time I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2) 33.9.1 using 64 bit MX Linux 25 (Infinity) Xfce.

Well, it was what is needed normally when reporting specific web compatibility issues, that is why it's in the template.
In this case though, (also) getting troubleshooting information was asked for.

Either way, looking at the info provided I'm thinking it may be one of your download helper extensions that's getting in the way. See if disabling either or both helps with your playback issue. Your preferences look ok, not seeing anything that would potentially interfere.

Oddly ? for me, in both PM & FF, I get a "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." message & the page is "source-like" (rather then laid out in an expected manner).
(SeaMonkey displays the page as expected, in a "feed-like" format.)

And in there it has "duration" & also "length".
"duration" is close to expected length.
"length", which is what actually displays on the webpage is "0" in all cases (though does not impact anything except for lack of knowledge given to the user who may be reading the page).

Then the "links" to the mp3's, theydo roll-over (so are not a 1 to 1 direct link), & do play, as expected.

You could always test PM in Safe Mode, where if it works, would tend to point to an extension issue,
or you could test the page in a new, clean Profile, which is also likely to work, which then point you back to an "issue" with your existing Profile, causing things to not work as you want.

It's working just fine for me...FWIW it does have a small mention at the start that it's using Irfanview to play, which I do have installed.

Either way, looking at the info provided I'm thinking it may be one of your download helper extensions that's getting in the way. See if disabling either or both helps with your playback issue. Your preferences look ok, not seeing anything that would potentially interfere.
Wait... I have two? How? I should only have one (Grabit). Where are you seeing a second one?
I was thinking "downloads window"? I don't know what it does specifically

I've used that add-on before; it brings back the main downloads UI from Pale Moon 27, which is a window instead of a popup from the toolbar button.

Ah, yeah that makes sense. Probably not related then if it's just UI (although if it does use the toolkit downloading back-end there may be nuance differences).
Bottom line seems to be it does a 5-hop dance before adding an auth key to the URL that allows downloads; that kind of indirection would logically result in an "unknown" file size, and may possibly interfere with playback if things get stripped along the way resulting in the auth parameter not being generated or passed. (it seems to be an over-engineered "no hotlinking" countermeasure)

I know it's been a while (I was really frustrated and just needed to step back from the problem for a while), but I'm still not any closer to my solution. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode and that made no difference.

Also, here's the Error Console info again, since editing my post is disabled after a certain period of time. I figured I could try and edit it back in to my OP, but I guess not. Oh, well.

Those errors look to be coming from "Downloads Window". It also works fine for me (Basilisk, Win10). The "0 bytes" file size is what is reported, not much to be done about that. FWIW, here's a Modify HTTP Response filter to format it (use content:encoded as description) and add the duration (in seconds; don't see a way to convert it to minutes).

Code: Select all

[["feeds.megaphone.fm",["/SBP/",["/<p>To support[\\s\\S]*?duration>(\\d+)/g","<p>$1 seconds.</p>$&","/( {6}</?)content:encoded/g","$1description"]]]]

You're not being singled out. Anyone with a decent amount of time under their belt should know what info we need to be able to help you. And we get on people's cases all the time about it when they ignore it. We do, however, have a bit more flexibility for new users who might not be familiar with how we tend to work here. You aren't.
I will be honest, I have done the same thing he has, so... idk if he is being singled out, but he isn't the only one who is guilty of what he is. I am too due to how confusing some of the info is to put down.

This being said, I see 0 byte stuff on the whole page to. The best solution?

you should click on the mp3 directly and download it from there by save page. I just did and it works.

Doesn't work for me.
