Videos and access to certain sites as well as the dark theme
Hello, I wanted to know several things about PaleMoon.
1. How can I make the video playable on all sites? It plays on some sites, but not on others, even if Firefox works correctly. Is there a plugin to download? If so, which one? Or does it require a .so element?
I find it unfortunate that some sites are distorted, like on Falkon. I suspect the problem with some videos prevents access to certain sites, like this one: https://www.arte.tv.
2. Next, I wanted to know why the page area isn't dark when sites allow it?
3. And why is there still no translation to the right of the address bar when visiting a site in another language? I'm asking all these questions to help you improve PaleMoon. I would like to be able to offer it as the default browser in my Linux based OS in both 32-bit lxde and 64-bit lxde and xfce desktop versions, but until points 2 and 3 are there, we will have to wait for point 1 to be resolved.

Re: Videos and access to certain sites as well as the dark theme
Thanks for considering Pale Moon as default browser in a Linux distribution.
re: 1
If sites make use of in-browser DRM, then you will only ever find that available in mainstream browsers because Google has an iron grip on this technology through WideVine which they will not license to FOSS projects. Besides that, we've long-since held that any sort of black-box DRM doesn't belong in the browser.
re: 2
Site theme preference in our case is up to the user. Preferences -> content -> button "Colors", in the bottom of that dialogue. Pale Moon does not expose system color schemes through that web-exposed choice to reduce privacy exposure/fingerprinting.
re: 3
Automatic web site translation will inevitably depend on a machine translation service. We won't build that into the browser by default, but perhaps you can find an extension that offers that to your users.

Re: Videos and access to certain sites as well as the dark theme
Hello, during my tests, I put myself in the shoes of people with various uses. There's arte.tv, which doesn't work, while Firefox presents no problems.
Only with PaleMoon does Firefox compatibility allow you to display live camera content on a site without a message indicating that the browser is not compatible. The problem is that the camera image is displayed and therefore remains blocked, with loading blocked.
After the distorted sites, an example: frandroid.com
arte/tv/fr, which displays a blank page. Add index.php to the end and you'll see what it indicates.
With other sites, no problems. I had set the 32-bit version of PaleMoon as the default, but not with the OpenSuse repository for Debian. This option is now selected in all LXDE and XFCE versions.
Back to the visual aspect: I'm talking about GTK here, so it's fine, but your browser won't support dark mode if you use a dark theme on the displayed pages. For example: duckduckgo should be dark gray, not gray-white. Github should be dark gray, not on a white background, etc.
For the language: Firefox. In ESR, I modified and unlocked the ability to translate a page like this by replying to you with a simple right-click on the address bar.
This feature has since been added by default. Even Chromium now offers it. Here, Firefox calls it "Translate Page - Beta," and that's perfect. Given the similarity in architecture, it should be able to add it. It uses Google Translate.

And why do you think Firefox can use Google Translate for this? Exactly, because they are buddies.krysto wrote: ↑2025-03-15, 14:21For the language: Firefox. In ESR, I modified and unlocked the ability to translate a page like this by replying to you with a simple right-click on the address bar.

For an independent application to use it, one would need to pay Google for the translation API calls.

Plus, that's what extensions are supposed to be there for.

@RealityRipple Thanks for the link.
Otherwise, if it's a free translator, I'm all for it. There are at least two free and open source ones:

Sorry, but in French, the module is not placed to the right of the address bar and the page is not translated. However, it is activated and the browser is restarted.

Whether the icon shows up is dependent on two factors: the <html> tag's "lang" attribute for the page, and "navigator.languages" which is set by the about:config value "intl.accept_languages". If <html lang="VALUE"> is not inside the navigator.languages array, the icon shows up, otherwise it doesn't. However, you can always right click on any page and choose "Translate to [lang]..." in the context menu, regardless of what language values are set.
