Videos (called demos) fail to play at QHub https://hub.quakeworld.nu/games/

Post by Hugo Oberstein » 2024-11-21, 21:06

Hello Moonchild and others here that support Pale Moon like; Job, Athenian200, FranklinDM, Moonbat and others. Moonbat please don't yell at me if I do this wrong, it is my first post. I also want to say hello to my confederate, Eduardo Lucas.

I have been using Pale Moon for 2 years now as my "daily driver" and do have other browsers as a backup. I have seen Pale Moon mature especially in the last year and many web pages that were causing me issues have been fixed by Pale Moon updates.

I am currently running into an issue where a game-video called, a "demo" (demonstration video), is failing to load and play. Until recently, this was working but something changed at that site.

The site is called Qhub and one of my test videos that fail is this address at the Qhub: https://hub.quakeworld.nu/games/?gameId=99798

This is a random demo that was picked just for testing and submission to you. The main demo site is: https://hub.quakeworld.nu/games/

This is a newly installed Pale Moon just minutes old, with no configurations made to it. No setting changes, no add-ons or extensions.

The Demo (video) loads its assets, the eventually will initialize, but that is it. There are 3 buttons one can press yet when pressed, they are ignored. Occasionally one can see the spinner for a few seconds as something is trying to be run and uses up all the resources of Pale Moon. or that is what I feel.

Thank you for any help on this and keep up the good work there at Pale Moon.

My apologies but I didn't see where to put the "Troubleshooting Information " in the new post area.

Here is the main data you should need:

Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
Name: Pale Moon
Version: 33.4.1 (32-bit)
Build ID: 20241101143309
Update Channel: release
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/6.7 Firefox/102.0 PaleMoon/33.4.1
OS: Windows_NT 6.1
CPU Capabilities: SSE2 AVX

There is a script that is automatically terminated and that's why it doesn't work.
You can disable this behaviour from the preferences and make the historical popup appear where you can click "continue" to let the script run, but my guess is that there is an infinite loop somewhere which is handled specially by other browsers and choke Pale Moon instead.

Try this userstyle.

Code: Select all

@-moz-document domain("hub.quakeworld.nu") {
  .aspect-video {
    height: 45vw;
  }
}
It seems the problem is due to missing aspect-ratio resulting in a zero-height video causing "vsync" to get stuck.

userstyle.

Better.
Page displays. (There is an initial hang.)
Though still no video playback (& awkward placement of some controls).

Download works.
Downloads as a ".mvd" file (which seems to have something to do with MAGIX Movie Studio?).
Which is actually a .gz file, which then looks to be a MVD1 file (which I take it again needs this MAGIX...).

Hello this is the OP.

I want to thank the people that commented but was desiring a higher level Pale Moon developer would look into this and see the problem since it was a fresh install of Pale Moon without changes or any extensions added. I as hoping for an, "ohh we see what they did wrong" and it would be fixed in the next update, or at least a, "here is what that site has wrong: 1, 2, 3... " and I could relay that back to them with my contacts.

Thank you to the people of Pale Moon support.

Unfortunately a hang in a minified script is very difficult to troubleshoot. There is no real information for us to see and the best that can be done is guess by reverse engineering -- which we often can't sink time into.

Hello Moonchild, Thank you very much for posting. I take it as an honor to hear from you.

I am sad to hear it is not an easy fix. I guess that is "the way it goes" sometimes, but I am pleased it was looked into by you.

I do use Pale Moon daily and I'm happy with it.

Thank you again.

Hello Moonchild and others. This is to let you know that the new version of Pale Moon 33.6, 32 bit, on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit, does work with a fresh install and clean profile.

Thank you, Moonchild and other developers, for the updates. Pale Moon just keeps getting better.

Since it works now, you should mark this as solved - there should be a checkbox button on the top right of each comment next to the ! and " buttons, you can mark your own comment as the solution.

Hello Moonbat, thank you for your suggestion. I did mark it as solved.

However, I have recently found out that while it did work on 2 test machines I have with fresh Pale Moon installs on, 2 other machines I get a black screen, with sound, and it shows the Names of the individuals and the game clock and the heath status of the players. Just total black for the video.

I assume this is a video Driver(???) or similar issue. But the site works with old Firefox 78 ESR on both of those machines! I tried turning off Hardware Acceleration but got the below message:

Unable to set up webgl context.
Please use a browser that supports it and has it enabled

Ironically, once I clicked OK to remove the message, the same thing happened with the black screen appearing, with the players names, data, game clock, but the sound would not work.

On the whole I feel this issue is resolved for most people. But, I can not help but wonder if the webmaster of that site is currently making changes at this moment. I will continue investigating.

I feel the new Pale Moon 33.6 is a fine update and Pale Moon just keeps getting better.

Not sure, but check if your video drivers are updated and current, and if you have hardware acceleration enabled in preferences-advanced-general tab.
