Okay, dozens of videos later and I may have found another freezing one (audio continues to play). Maybe. It could also be an editing mistake.

PM version: 33.4.0.1 (64-bit)

Did both 1878510 and 1900191 get addressed, or what it just the former?

Didn't have any issues with that one here. If nothing else it seems like the bug is much more sporadic.

I watched the entire video from start to finish. But, instead of watching the video in 720p60 HD, I watched the video in 1080p60 HD. No freezing, no stuttering, no buffering, etc.

I am using a desktop tower computer. On the motherboard is a 12th generation Intel i7 chip. The processor speed of this chip is 3.60 not over clocked. It has a nice AMD Radeon graphics card installed in it. This card allows me to watch many videos in HD mode all the way up to 2150p60 4K (or highter) without any problems.

The tower also has 32 GB of memory. My internet download speed is 585 Mbps using an ethernet cable. And my ISP is Comcast.

At this time, I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.4.0.1 (GTK2) running in 64 bit linux Mint 22 (Wilma) Xfce.

And my linux Pale Moon has "never" been installed in any of the 64 bit linux distros with Xfce I am using now (Mint, MX Linux, Debian) or other linux distros I have used in the past. I have been using this method for linux Pale Moon since January of 2014.
Linux Mint 22 (Wilma) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
MX Linux 23.4 (Libretto) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 12.8 (Bookworm) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

Check if you have been served with AV1 stream, it is available there in 720p and could be the cause.

Yah, I can watch in 4k no problem with all of my machines, but the one I was on at the time is connected to a 42" ViewSonic television capable of only 1080p, which actually works best for our use case right now when set to 720p (so I can read text from the couch without scaling).

I read at some places VP9 is higher quality at the same size than H.264. Some time ago I was looking at CPU usage when comparing both codecs in Pale Moon, hardware decoding was disabled, decoding H.264 has resulted in consistently higher CPU usage. I've been using VP9 for years.

Just got another one around 2:15 in 720p. Switched to 1080p and it was fine:

Edit: Never mind, got another at 2:40 in 1080p.

@ Top Gun

I clicked on the link you provided and watched the video for 10 minutes of time. To be fair, I was not going to watch the entire 43 minute video. I figured if the problem did not show up after 10 minutes of time, it wasn't going to show up at all using my desktop tower.

I cannot reproduce the problems you seem to be having with that video.

YouTube stats for nerds this morning says vp9 (302) / opus (251) but interestingly enough the tree-cutting video I linked is not freezing anymore at my specified timestamp. So I may have been fed the AV1 stream yesterday. I'll keep track of which codec I'm getting the next time I see any of the issues this thread is about.

@ BenFenner

I did see the time stamp on this one at the 0:50 second mark. But this video I enjoyed watching. Maybe because I am an outdoors person. Loved the scenery in this video. Loved the big International Harvester "off road" vehicle too. Now that is an off road truck! I liked the video so much, the 20 minute video felt like 10 minutes for me.

As for the "pine nuts", I can relate to that as well. Why? Because my home is in the piney woods of southeast Texas and I've done the pine nut "thing". And it is an acquired taste.

Getting back on topic since I "veered off the road" like the stuck Dodge Ram truck in this video if you catch my drift.

I checked out the definition modes it offered to watch the video. To my surprise and as a bonus for me, I watched the entire video in 2160p 4K which really made the mountain scenery stand out. Crisp and clear. And the video, for me, never had any problems with freezing/audio or other problems many of you are experiencing.

In closing. With all the videos in this topic thread which I've watched, I cannot reproduce any of the YouTube (and Pale Moon) problems which people are complaining about.

Were you watching an appreciable amount of YouTube in the weeks before PM 33.4.0 was released? Were you noticing the issues then, or you've never experienced them?

It's so weird how hit-or-miss it is. Maybe it's just luck of the draw depending on which codec you get served. One thing I will say is that before the update, once I hit one of the video freezes, I'd inevitably run into the infinite loading circle, and that would be it. The few times it's happened since the update, once I managed to get past it, the rest of the video played just fine. I got through the remaining 40 minutes of the video I linked without a single blip.

Terraria is a fantastic game, and easily the best cost-to-playtime ratio in my library. Just be warned that it will consume your life.

I practically "LIVE" on YouTube. And I have been on YouTube heavily for the past eleven years everyday. I have never had any problems with YouTube when using Pale Moon.

But you have to realize, I do things differently when I use linux Pale Moon. My Pale Moon is never installed in any of the linux distros I use whether Pale Moon is running on bare metal or using it in a linux iso in "Live Mode" where one can play with a distro without installing it on a hard drive to see if one likes the distro enough to install it to a hard drive.

I do not have a YouTube account. I also watch YT videos with the old legacy uBlock Origin 1.16.4 30 version. And I know that ticks off YT to no end since I keep their irrelevant ads at bay which amounts to the old "Barbarians At The Gate".

If a person has a YouTube account, then YouTube has got them by the "short hairs". In my opinion, YouTube will do it's utmost best to force people to purchase YouTube Premium whether they are using Pale Moon, Firefox, etc. The only things YouTube wants browser wise is for people to use Chrome and to pay for a YouTube Premium account.

Since I use a desktop tower computer, it has a very good graphics card in it. Not a top of the line card like the "gamer's" use with their water cooled cards. A 12th generation Intel i7 processor with a processor speed of 3.60 and is not over clocked, 32 GB of memory, a download internet speed from my ISP, Comcast, of 585 Mbps.

You posted a link to a video. I will post a surfing video, not too long in time (4:09 in total), but for experiments sake, I can watch this video in 2160p 4K without any audio problems, no buffering, no freezing, etc. See if you can do the same and not encounter any problems running in 2160p 4K.

BTW, I chose this video because Rachael is using a fish tail 9'2" in length longboard whereas my longboard has a pin tail and is 9'3" in length. I wanted to compare boards. I can even loop this video for hours if I wanted and there will be no problems.

In case of youtube you will usually get both lower quality and smaller size.

Anyways, it's always better to use hardware video decoding, if supported.

TBH I can't tell most of the time on YT, there was one blog post by Google I think many years ago when they made a comparison on one video and AVC1 was blurrier. And in gaming circles some are saying AVC1 is bad when there's a lot of movement.

Although I did notice one video where some segments are super blurry in VP9 at 1080p while AVC1 at same resolution is fine. But so far I haven't noticed the opposite anywhere, so I don't know.

Were they changing settings throughout the years or they use the same for each codec all the time and it just depends on the video which comes out better? I realize quality is not the priority for them.

I just had this happen with an AV1 video, where the video would freeze and the audio continue. It was repeatable.
No dropped frames reported
Res: 1280x720@30
Codecs: AV01.0.05M.08 (398) / opus (251)

The only thing is.... This was in Edge, which is Blink-based! So, it is literally just YT screwing up videos at the moment.

Well, Twitch live streams are in H264/AVC.

I guess, it's safe for now to assume that bigger youtube video bitrate means better quality...
