Palemoon 33 crashes on the hyperx.com web site

Unread post by 4td8s » 2024-04-17, 23:48

https://hyperx.com

attempting to view this web site causes Palemoon browser 33.0.2 to immediately close as if it crashed.
I even launched Palemoon without any add-ons enabled and going to that site still makes the PM browser window close.

tested this in Windows 10 versions LTSC 2019 build 17763.5696 and LTSC 2021 build 19044.4291

Who's going to post troubleshooting information, us? How on earth do you blissfully ignore the post template that explicitly asks for it?
The site opens fine on Linux - but again we aren't mind readers to know what's going on if you wont' follow instructions that are in front of your face.

Works fine here (Basilisk 2024.02.03 64-bit, Windows 10.0.19045.3086).

Works fine here (Pale Moon 33.0.2 64-bit/Win7).
You might check with a fresh profile.

Linux Mint 22.1 (Xia) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
MX Linux 23.6 (Libretto) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

No issues seen here either. As said try a new, fresh profile and see if you can reproduce.

tried a fresh profile for Palemoon 33.0.2 on Windows 10 Home 22H2 on a laptop; same result. crash & close quickly
tried a fresh profile for Palemoon 33.0.2 on another PC running Windows 11 23H2 build 22631.3447. same result as on Win10 - crash & exits quickly.

tried also under other different Windows versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. no crash & loads fine

seems the problem occurs in recent Windows 10 & 11 versions only (with certain recent OS updates) but not on Win7 & 8.1.

I'm running Windows 10 22H2 without issues on that site.

Do you have any software installed on the win 10 and win 11 that might interfere with program execution, like internet security suites, specific real-time anti-virus, or similar?

nope. just windows defender

anyways, the problem is mostly fixed (though not completely) with Palemoon version 33.1.0 on most of my PCs using most Intel and/or AMD processors, except with certain AMD K10 based CPUs.

the hyperx.com site works correctly with Palemoon 33.1.0 (no crash, no sudden quit) on most of my other laptop & desktop Win10 PCs using Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 {Merom}, Intel Core i5-650 {Clarkdale}, Intel Core i5-2500 {Sandy Bridge} and AMD A6-5200 {Kabini}.

now it's seems Palemoon 33.1.0 abruptly exits/quits on the hyperx.com site only on two of my computers using some old Socket AM3 based AMD K10 processors like AMD Phenom II X4 925 & 955 {the "Deneb" series of CPUs - that kinda narrows it down}
I'll have to test PM 33.1.0 with other K10 based AMD processors (like Athlon II & Athlon 64 X2) to see if the "crash" happens on those other old AMD processors

ultimately solved the problem by just changing/upgrading from those AMD Phenom II X4 cpus to AMD FX processors like FX-4300 & FX-6300 on such systems.
at least one of those pcs was actually using a Socket AM3+ board (not an AM3 based board)
no need to test with other Amd K10 based cpus anymore

the official Palemoon browser handles the hyperx.com site correctly with those AMD FX cpus without crashing

I guess Palemoon needed certain cpu instructions that the Amd FX (and newer) cpus provide that the Phenom II (and Athlon II K10) processors were lacking to make the hyperx.com site load correctly without Palemoon abruptly quitting.

Unless those CPUs misreport their capabilities (which is a possibility, I guess) there shouldn't be an issue as Pale Moon has fallback code for later instructions not being supported in the parts that are manually cpu optimized.

As a bonus though your new CPUs support AVX which is going to be required going forward. Phenom II CPUs do not.
