Does YouTube.com consume more CPU / GPU on PaleMoon 33.2.0 on Mac?
I am using PaleMoon 33.2.0 on macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and noticed that whenever I watch any video on Youtube, my mac really heats up (usually above 90 degrees C and sometimes even touching 98 degrees C). Activity manager shows PaleMoon using a lot of CPU (120-135%) and GPU (10-40%) when the video is playing. Note that these are not HD videos - I mostly watch youtube videos only at 480p (which I set manually) and often at 1.25x to 1.5x playback speed.
I have observed this on a new profile, without any addons running too. The same videos on youtube, when played on Tor Browser, use a lot less CPU / GPU (and the CPU temperature is usually around 80 to 80 degrees with it)
Can somebody confirm if it is the same on Linux and Windows too?

I have not noticed the usage being higher on Mac than other platforms, but there are hardware acceleration patches that can reduce the usage on some video codecs on Mac that have not been applied. They are on my TODO list, but I have not been able to work on that list in any significant way since January.

@dbsoft: Thanks for looking into this. I think PM Mac does need some tweaking. I've roughly observed a general increase of 5-10 degrees C on the CPU maybe from the last 4 to 5 stable releases of PM. (Since I have an Intel Mac, and sometimes do video encoding on it, I constantly monitor the CPU temperature).
Perhaps PM can also benefit from an about:cpu flag like Chromium? Even the basics, like this example Chromium output for about:gpu, should be enough to begin with -

When you install HTML5 media tuner addon (or disable VP9/webm support manually), your mac becomes cooler?marigold wrote: ↑2024-06-23, 15:20I am using PaleMoon 33.2.0 on macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and noticed that whenever I watch any video on Youtube, my mac really heats up (usually above 90 degrees C and sometimes even touching 98 degrees C). Re: Does YouTube.com consume more CPU / GPU on PaleMoon 33.2.0 on Mac?
Thank you for the suggestion - when I disabled 'Enable Media Source Extension (MSE)' and WebM in Media Formats (in Preferences > Content > Media), the cpu does seem to run 4-5 degree cooler. But that doesn't help much as PaleMoon 33.3.0 seems to have made things even worse and watching videos now pushes CPU usage beyond 110%-145% and with CPU temperatures easily crossing beyond 100 degrees C (at which point CPU throttling kicks in).
When I watch the same online video on Firefox (Tor Browser), less CPU / GPU is used and the temperature is around 85 degrees C.

@ marigold
I do not own a Mac. You did ask for a linux comparison in your first post so I thought I would give you a comparison.
This post I am making this with is on a desktop tower computer which originally came with Windows 8 (which I kicked to the curb and went to linux). It has three hard drives in it and this hard drive is loaded with 64 bit Linux Mint 22 (Wilma) Xfce. I am using Pale Moon's defaults for Media Formats.
At this time I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.3.0 (GTK2). I just came from watching a surfing video which I viewed in 2160p60 4K HD mode. My CPU temperature was 47 degrees C.
This tower computer has at four fans in it, 32 GB of memory and a decent graphics card (AMD Radeon).

Re: Does YouTube.com consume more CPU / GPU on PaleMoon 33.2.0 on Mac?
Actually, you can enable MSE for MP4.
So, the previous version appears cooler? But that doesn't help much as PaleMoon 33.3.0 seems to have made things even worse and watching videos now pushes CPU usage beyond 110%-145% and with CPU temperatures easily crossing beyond 100 degrees C (at which point CPU throttling kicks in).
And what actually says PM about:support for Compositing, GPU Accelerated Windows and Hardware H264 Decoding? When I watch the same online video on Firefox (Tor Browser), less CPU / GPU is used and the temperature is around 85 degrees C.
