Attack Of The 50 ft Google Maps

Unread post by njren » 2024-03-29, 05:01

Searching anything that results in Google's standard side-by-side photo + map now triggers a 50s sci-fi growth spurt that -in cases like the sample link below- doesn't seem to ever stop:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Erzgebirge&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Some others I tried swell to take up most or all of the page. All of them yield the same/almost the same error reporting as quoted below.

Pale Moon 33.0.2 x64, Windows 7.

I've been getting this issue as well. I had to use ublock to block the images from showing, but would rather not have to do so. There's also an issue when searching a product e.g. keyless door locks, and the window doesn't load up correctly with the text being overlayed with a side menu. I ended up having to block the side menu using ublock.

It would seem to be another issue with display:grid - height is given as 100%, which keeps increasing as the image updates. Here's a style to use a fixed size, instead (adjust to suit).

Code: Select all

@-moz-document domain("www.google.com") {
  .e6hL7d {
    height: 312px;
  }
}

I reported that behavior last November:

Unfortunately still an issue.

Unfortunately Google will always push its own services to be "best viewed in Chrome". Google Maps and Earth have regularly had problems.

I haven't checked Google Maps on this version of Pale Moon yet, but just in case.
Do you recommend a good alternative to Google Maps that works well on Pale Moon?
I use them to preview locations for map/game creation.
And a different question.
Why do people (mainly webmasters) love Google Chrome so much instead of treating browsers equally?
There used to be additional code for Internet Explorer, but today I have the impression that they are mainly created for Chrome and other browsers will either cope or "switch to Chrome".

DuckDuckGo gives Apple Maps results which works real well for finding of locations and getting directions and so forth. Just type your address or city in the DuckDuckGo search field and it will pop up the map at the top of the search results, which you can then click on to interact with the map.

Thank you very much.
I use DuckDuckGo on Pale Moon.
Check if it has Street View mode like Google Maps

It has overhead satellite view, but not street level view as if you are driving.

So it won't be useful to me, but thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure that only Google has put up the vast amount of time and money required to create streetview. They can justify the cost because it's part of their profitable advertising model as the internet's yellow pages. But there's no alternative to that I don't think.

Street view is Google only and exists because they've spent a ton of money driving around their camera vans all over the world.

I see. So I will have to stick with it, hoping that it will work with Pale Moon :) I use Chrome as a last resort, not to mention other browsers, ;)
