NetFusion Suite (SeaMonkey fork) Alpha 1 Release

Unread post by mrnhmath » 2023-08-19, 22:25

Web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple — all your Internet needs in one application.
Hello! This is the start of a (hopefully) new beginning for long-time users and fans of the Mozilla-derived Internet Suite. NetFusion is a project that aims to bring the best of old and new. It's a Suite based on the mature SeaMonkey 2.49.x codebase and built on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP), the well-known foundation for current XUL-based applications.

In this first alpha, I welcome interested parties to play around with the application and look for setting up a daily usage workflow, while giving feedback on issues and potential improvements. Do note that NetFusion is NOT SeaMonkey and has its own ID, so add-ons need to be modified in order to work with it.

If you're a creative, feel free to provide ideas for the artwork and branding, as it's still lacking one!

Windows (x86/x64) and Linux (x64 gtk+2) binaries can be found in the following directory: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Aj2Pa8TVZ2v-uwqrx_l ... M?e=CJss8D

To build NetFusion yourself, you need basic knowledge on building Mozilla applications. Instructions should be available shortly in the repo's Wiki.

Hi, just a message from an addon developers to interested people:
If you want one of my addons, like Sasuga, on NetFusion (mostly the browser component) for all except ηMatrix just adding the application ID should be enough.
ηMatrix will require thourough testing no matter what as the original uMatrix was not designed to be used outside Chrome and Firefox, so despite my best efforts I can't really guarantee perfect compatibility at the platform (UXP) level across different applications.
Please do report results even if it works; nothing really needs to be changed in the addons, so the application ID can be added to a proper release once tested. However note that support for all except Pale Moon is on a bug report basis, so if things break but nobody reports them, they will stay broken until reported.

Found this for possible branding. The icons are free to use and even come in various formats and sizes.

I quick threw this together with those free icons just to see what it'd look like. Not horrible, but i'm sure you'll come up with something pretty slick soon enough.

I would try it if there was a better download site. I don't want to let MS run script.

I am a Linux user who has never been able to attempt building software without panic attacks, so I cannot try this myself, but I wish you success. SeaMonkey had appealed to me before I had settled on Pale Moon. Among the decisive factors was that Pale Moon continues to support NPAPI. Will you also retain this? Will you support language packs?

I downloaded and ran the GNU/Linux tarball, it ran well. I played videos on it for about 30-40 minutes and did not see any problems, and browsed around a few other sites. I noticed that it was using almost the same amount of memory as Pale Moon if I was on the same site on each browser, so the presence of the Goanna engine seems very evident. It runs like Pale Moon but looks like SeaMonkey - pretty cool! I'll try some add-ons and emailing and RSS feeds and I'll see if I can find sites that will crash it over the next few days, but so far there's been nothing but smooth sailing.

Several of my extensions work with Borealis - if required I can add NetFusion's application ID to make them work with it as well. For others attempting the same - note that it's not just an ID change because names of menus and other features like the sidebar work differently. My extension TextFX has separate code for the sidebar in Borealis to make it work properly.

Building instructions are up.

Thanks for the idea and trying NetFusion out, wicknix!

Sorry, since my personal server is down, it's the best I can currently offer. You can open the page in a private window if that's an issue.

NPAPI is guaranteed as long as there is support for it in the platform. Langpacks are planned for beta.

Agree. MS does not need me to log in just for a download. IOW I won't log in to MS just for a download.

Then you know that for that download, "MS does not need me to log in just for a download".

NetFusion will not save any passwords for mail-accounts. Is there anything I have to change in about:config?

Which type of authentication method are you using? In my end, it prompts for a password with the normal authentication method and properly saves it if the checkbox gets marked.

Off-topic:
Great to see another fork of Seamonkey! Been playing with Sealion and like it a lot, I love the barebones feel of borealis. Keen to try Netfusion's browser part of this.

I don't know about his login (I don't even have a MS account), but with javascript blocked I get a blank page. Maybe one of the download sites (e.g. Snapfiles) will host it when released.

Of course: that was the only way I knew the page wanted a login.
Then you know that for that download, "MS does not need me to log in just for a download".
Nope. The page presented a login dialog.

Then, my genius moment for the day: the MS OneDrive site was seeing my browser cookies left over from my previous logged-in session. Deleted the cookies, and walla - downloads were available.

Will these be prepared from the existing SeaMonkey packs or developed independently? I know that Basilisk, while it supports language packs, exists only in English for lack of third-party developers.

NetFusion has very few strings that are new or different from SeaMonkey, so no need to reinvent the wheel here. Once I'm done with branding, I'll set up a l10n repo and do initial work on updating them.

In light of critical WebP security issue, Alpha 2 binaries are up with the same platform code as Pale Moon 32.4.0.1.

This release brings several fixes and improvements at application level such as working hardware acceleration and search engine preferences, toggleable Gecko UA advertising for better web compatibility and general cleanup. For a full changelog, please refer to the repo commit history.

Is there supposed to be a Lightning-like add-on or built-in to give calendar features?
