SeaMonkey fork

Unread post by mrnhmath » 2023-08-05, 19:03

To provide a healthy future for the legacy of the Mozilla Suite and its descendant, I've been working on a fork of SeaMonkey, built on the Unified XUL Platform and the Goanna engine. Stay tuned...

How would it be different from Pale Moon?

Just curious.

Do you have an estimated ETA (estimated time of arrival) when it might go public?
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
Linux Debian 12.5 (Bookworm) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox

Seamonkey fork... nice :)

It is anyway not understandable why the Seamonkey guys are not switching over to UXP - UXP clearly shows that ECMAScript features CAN be backported if there are good people around.

So instead of trying to tame modern trash Mozilla based code to work with their UI, they should be better supporting UXP/Pale Moon instead.

Same goes for the Waterfox team, Waterfox Classic would be better based on UXP too.

It would be a suite, not just a browser.

It's probably still the same reason they refused cooperation way back when: they are too afraid to lose access to Mozilla infra; and I'm guessing they are equally resistant to any change. I predicted SeaMonkey would have an increasingly hard time dealing with Mozilla only focusing on Firefox which would force them to adapt their front-end and pray that they never run into something they can't possibly do on Gecko any longer... :geek:

This topic is about the upcoming fork. If you wanna talk about the history of SeaMonkey, please do it so in another place.

I plan to publish an alpha sometime this month as I am still ironing out some wrinkles.

No need to. It's just that when it comes to Mozilla technology, things can get pretty inflammatory as you know very well.

I still haven't decided on a name for the application yet (suggestions welcome!). I'd like to have artwork and branding done before a beta version.

Is it Windows only for now or do you have Linux builds as well?

SeaStar to follow the SeaMonkey motif?
FireCat to pay homage to a great album?
QuantumTortoise just for fun?

When I was working before on a SeaMonkey fork of mine with IceApe as the base (I eventually gave up on it because it just seems too much work for me to revert all those undesirable changes Hyperbola did, and I didn't have a powerful enough computer for me to build the application at the time), I was planning to call the suite "Kawashiro". It's Japanese for "river castle" (though at first I thought it meant "river child", I swear I've read somewhere where "shiro" means "child"), so it's both a Touhou reference and a nice water-based homage to the SeaMonkey project. :)

The search plugins, the removal of IRC (without any assurance that we can get it back as an installable extension!), the GUID change, and I think they also removed Lightning. IIRC I got really stumped at the IRC part, as I really wanted it back at the time, and on-par with current SeaMonkey 2.53 too (so I used Ambassador without realizing it never really got a proper integration with Mozilla suite).

You'd also have to factor in how they neglected Windows support (and I also didn't have a Windows computer I could test on at the time), and I wanted to build for Windows and Linux.

I guess you could say perfection is the enemy of good...

I've been working on a fork of SeaMonkey
Very cool! I also did similar by using the defunct Borealis code as a base for Mac and Linux. Browser component only. Mail can be built separately. IRC can be installed via an extension. Still have to iron a few things out, but it's usable.

I'll be doing x64 Windows and x64 gtk+2 Linux.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a name in mind, it's a little on the corporate side though.

I plan to include all the components minus Lightning, as I want the experience to be as close to the original Mozilla suite as possible.

defunct Borealis code? Is that even possible? I thought Tobin had more restrictive trademarks on his projects
