I've been wondering why you call it a "Navigator" instead of a browser.

I think it has something to do with the fact that we've gone from navigating to carefree surfing, but in 2019 we're back to having to carefully navigate the web.

Navigator, is the name of the web browsing portion of the SeaMonkey (browser) "suite" (the suite, also encompassing; mail, news, chat, html editor...).
(Now, if that is the reason why... ?)

Well.. SeaMonkey stopped calling it the component "Navigator" at 2.0 likely fearing trademark issues. I checked it out though and there is no trademark for "Navigator" describing a web browser, only "Netscape Navigator".. Other than that? I just love the Navigator name.

We once Navigated the ocean of the internet.. Now we can Navigate the solar winds as they interact with the atmosphere of that ubiquitous Global Network with Borealis!

Or some such bullshit ;)

The obvious question is what are the distinctive features of Borealis?

Traditional UI almost to a fault. That is the bulk of it. Simpler (or is that more primitive) implementation of constructs, expansive preferences, menus, windows and dialogs to access things. A web client that would benefit greatly from extensions.

In Phoenix-based browsers like Pale Moon and Basilisk (ok not as much in Basilisk or more properly not entirely in the same way) you get lots of inbox stuff that makes it customizable even without extensions which is why both are better for more general or casual users.

Borealis, while having almost all the essentials, lends its self to deeper customization through extensibility because while featured it is also quite bare bones. There is less to get in the way of extensions. This makes it great for power users and those who want to expand the feature set from only one level up, in most cases, from the base platform.

As far as UI level, besides the stuff Mozilla deemed non-essential to have in Firefox when they first created it, consider the main window to be roughly analogous to somewhere between Firefox 2 and 3.x but with a Netscape Navigator bent to its design. That is my vision.

Here is a screenshot I took a while back showing various built in windows and a few from extensions.

I am going to release a 0.9.XXXX version with AUS and get the Add-ons Site enabled in the very near future as it stands now (once I get branding done). So be on the lookout for that! Maybe a month or sooner.. It won't be a completely complete thing but that is why it isn't a 1.0

Looking forward to it.

Have a feature question. Will there be an option to make Ctrl-Tab cycle through tabs in MRU order? Right now, that doesn't seem to be a built-in feature in SeaMonkey. It would be nice to have it in Borealis, as it is in PM.

You want to add the functionality behind a pref? Then sure, why not? Otherwise, no.

Looking good. Very keen to try this browser. Think I'll enjoy the simplicity of it.

Not really, been pretty busy everywhere else. At the very least it needs the shellservice replaced and branding to get a release. Really needs its chrome package changed from communicator to navigator for most components for extension and theme development and targeting.

Those three things are the major blockers.
