For some reason I thought you could only have IMAP Gmail with OAuth2 and nothing else. So, after about a week it looks like using "Normal password" authentication does not cause this "account reset" issue at all.

And this, kids, is why you don't want to mix stateless web-based technology with long-established stateful protocols.

If you've enabled 2FA for your Google account, they offer separate app passwords to use with third party clients that don't support it - a single autogenerated password that you can use, the idea being it won't compromise your account if lost you can revoke it later.

Thanks moonbat, I'll try enabling 2FA and app passwords to see if things like these will appear less frequently:

Re Interlink 7433.

I have had this problem now for a couple of releases of Interlink. My anti-virus software is Avast Free Antivirus.

As soon as I open the program I receive the following error message:

'Failed to connect to server BTInternet.com'

I then receive the message about legitimate banks, stores and other public sites and I am informed that the site attempts to identify itself with invalid information.

'Unknown identity

The certificate is not trusted because it hasn't been verified as issued by a trusted authority using a secure signature.

The certificate was issued to mail.btinternet.com by:
Common name avast! Web/Mail Shield Root
Organisation avast! Web/Mail Shield
Organisational Unit generated by avast! antivirus for SSL/TLS scanning
Valid 19 March 2019 to 18 March 2021

I am not questioning the validity of Interlink's action. I find it odd that an an organisation whose principal objective is anti virus software should be given control of an email provider.

Could I have your general thoughts please?

I have yet to confirm a General Acceptance. I doubt that BT would take any notice of one user so I doubt that a complaint would do anything. So in view of the size of BT should I accept the risk?

Grant

Avast! is intercepting your secure connection to BT and breaking end-to-end encryption and authentication this way.
You should disable web/mail shield in Avast options because it is simply a bad idea.

Thank you for your rapid reply.

I went into Avast Anti Virus and found, under 'Core Shields', both 'Web Shield' and ''Mail Shield'. I turned off Mail Shield and then tried to use Interlink. There were no problems, email sent successfully.

Two questions come to mind:

- what are the security implications of permanently disabling Mail Shield?
- should I do the same for Web Shield (no problems noticed)?

MGB1971, please read at the link provided in Moonchild's answer for more details.

1. None in particular, but I'd still recommend using protection software (better that your current one, see this post for an example) and/or a good ad/content blocker with proper filterlists (don't overdo it).

2. Yes, and see no. 1.

I don't recommend it. These security suites have been progressing towards becoming malware in and of them selves over the last decade. Including the well known ones.

If you need that crap maybe you should just stick to webmail.

@adesh - thank you for your comments

@back2themoon - thank you too. You give Emisoft as an example, do you have two or three more suggestions I can investigate? I should add that I do use uBlock Origin, is that the sort of ad/content blocker you have in mind?

@New Tobin Paradigm - for the avoidance of all doubt, what is it that you don't recommend? I think you probably mean Avast.

I don't know of another product that doesn't perform HTTPS filtering, so that's the only one I can recommend. It seems the majority of such software today employs this dubious method.

About uBO yes, that was the idea.

How can I change the sequence of my mail accounts so that, for example, CDE is shown above ABC?

By adding them in the desired order.

Manually sort folders 1.1.1

back2themoon - thank you, sounds like the solution.

Moonchild - 'By adding them in the desired order'. So are you suggesting I start again by deleting the accounts already set up? Really?

Yup, that's what I suggesting, unless you want to manually renumber accounts in your config files, because the Thunderbird team never made it an option otherwise -- and I wasn't aware of the extension being available.

Some tips here on how to attempt this manually, but IMO it's not worth the effort -and risk- since the extension works well.

back2themoon - I have now installed and tried the extension you recommended. I can confirm that is does, indeed, work very well.

Moonchild - understood, thank you.

Not sure if I should be reporting this here or just make a ticket on GitHub, but it looks like Interlink still has some Mozilla/Thunderbird branding baked into the executable.

From Process Explorer, the "Company Name" column says "Mozilla Corporation" (I'm not sure where it gets that from, though):

And if you right-click on the installed interlink.exe in Windows Explorer and look at the Details tab, the "Copyright" and "Legal trademarks" information references Thunderbird and Mozilla:

Obviously not the biggest issue, but I thought it probably should get cleaned up at some point.
