Re: The Official Interlink Mail & News Discussion Thread

Post by context » 2019-12-11, 17:45

I suppose I'm late to the game of converting my email software. I've used FossaMail for years (the install log shows it's version 25.2.4) and the Roaming folder on my user account path is now at 1.6 GB.

Now I have a new computer that runs Win10 Pro 64-bit ... so I've downloaded the Interlink 64-bit version to install. But before I install, I'd like have a plan that facilitates a smooth transition.

I've read a dozen different threads in hopes of finding specific instructions. But the few breadcrumbs I've found seem to be prefaced with statements similar to: "I used a very unconventional way..."

I also found obtuse instructions like "you may want to any cached absolute file paths" (which doesn't fit with anything I know) ... plus, some cautions about extensions ... which I don't use (that I'm aware of). So my question is:

What files can I copy forward to preserve my account identities, my contacts and my email history? (I have 6 email accounts.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

(BTW, if this isn't the proper thread for my question, please let me know.)

If you have ever copied a profile for a Mozilla-style application before then it will be pretty much like that. Since Interlink will see FossaMail as an older version it will upgrade the profile with little issue. The number one thing you should do though is uninstall the Lightning and Google Provider extensions before attempting anything as they won't match and will conflict with the new properly bundled incarnations in Interlink.

Aside from that and the whole, go through every account to fix any absolute paths described a few posts above, it shouldn't be any different than copying any "older" profile.

In fact, you can take the whole of %appdata%\FossaMail and copy it to %appdata%\Binary Outcast\Interlink after you have exterminated lightning and the gcal provider and any langpacks. You likely should disable all your other extensions too beforehand and test them one by one afterward. Do this BEFORE copying and running Interlink. We want it to treat it as an upgrade.

Of course this ASSUMES you didn't put your mailboxes outside your profile.. If that is the case, it will get VERY messy if you attempt this so don't. I can't really help beyond though. It SHOULD work. This type of thing can ONLY be achieved for any originally Thunderbird-based profile up to 52.x.

Thanks for the prompt reply. There's only one part that's unclear:
Do this BEFORE copying and running Interlink.
If I follow, the general procedure is then:
> disable or remove any extensions in the FossaMail application on my old PC
> install Interlink on my new PC, but don't start it
> copy over the whole of %appdata%\FossaMail
> start Interlink and all my content should be there (because it will treated by Interlink like an upgrade)

Did I understand?

(BTW, it is the case that I've never copied a profile for a Mozilla-style application before. I guess I always "started over".)

Did you copy %appdata%\FossaMail as %appdata%\Binary Outcast\Interlink?

If so, then yes.

Don't forget afterward to go into Account Settings and go through all the accounts one by one selecting the top-level node and hit OK, re-open Account Settings and doing the next one to update cached absolute paths. (This needs to be done in the Server Settings node of the tree for imap accounts)

Did you copy %appdata%\FossaMail as %appdata%\Binary Outcast\Interlink?
I will do that. And then I'll include these as the last steps:

> go through all the accounts one by one selecting the top-level node and hit OK
> re-open Account Settings and do the next one to update cached absolute paths (in the Server Settings node of the tree for imap accounts)

Thanks for your help.

Did you copy %appdata%\FossaMail as %appdata%\Binary Outcast\Interlink?
A little hitch: with Interlink installed, but not started, there are no directories on the AppData path.

Should I start Interlink on the new PC so it creates the directories? (and then exit Interlink)
Or should I first move the AppData from the old PC and then start Interlink?

And BTW, there are FossaMail directories in both Local and Roaming on the old PC. Do I move both file sets?

Just create the tree in Roaming AppData aka %appdata%.

%appdata%\FossaMail -> %appdata%\Binary Outcast\Interlink

I'm glad to report that everything went according to plan. My 6 email accounts all appear to work ... and my 1.65Gb of history is preserved. (Out of curiosity, I checked and Interlink did create a file set in the Local path, although it doesn't seem to contain much related to my profile.) All in all, it's a good procedure.

I do have two questions:

1. Is it practical for me to truncate my history for each account? ... say, remove messages older than 3 years.

2. I realize this is trivial (given that everything is working so well), but is any adjustment possible in the vertical lines per inch in the account tree and in the message list. It looks, to me, to be 1.5 line spacing. I'd prefer something like 1.25 lines so more of my message history can be there.

Anyway, thanks for the guidance. As others have said: we're glad Interlink exists. There's a real need for a solid, straightforward client.

Local AppData for us is largely used for update staging. This follows the Windows NT convention that local appdata is that, local to the specific machine and roaming appdata is that data that would follow you around in a Windows NT network if you used a central server for accounts and enabled roaming profiles.

To answer your two specific questions.. Nah and you can use userChrome.css just like any mozilla-style application as the theme selection is rather thin at the moment it seems.

Mr. Tobin,
I installed the Interlink on Linux Mint 19.3, so far works like a charm. Installed the GTK-3 build on a 3 yr. old Lenovo laptop. Will post more after I use it a bit. As always, great work on another useful tool, alternative choice!

Maybe I'm just blind, but I haven't been able to find anything like Enigmail that works with Interlink. Enigmail itself doesn't work because it's a JetPack extension. Do you know of any alternatives?

Use the 1.9.9 version at Thunderbird's add-ons site.

I think it would be good to add built-in OpenPGP functionality, as with Thunderbird in the future. The 1.9.9 version of Enigmail has some known security vulnerabilities.

Yeah? Like what?

While waiting hoping for Tobin to prepare a nice, dark Interlink theme on his huge new monitor, try out this TT DeepDark theme. I installed version 11.0.4.1 (scroll down for it) and it seems to co-operate decently with Interlink. You can adjust the Message Pane in Preferences/Display/Formatting/Colors. It moves the Mail Toolbar on top but it's better than nothing.

Install and use at your own risk and backup beforehand.
