Today I wanted to install a couple small packages from a third-party PPA, and Synaptic was unable to comply. Thought only the respective PPA was down for some reason, but when checking online it turned out Canonical as a whole - which includes launchpad.net - has been having major difficulties.
Does anyone here have any details as to what is going on with Canonical?

Ah, that explains it. Thanks, hadn't stumbled into that information.
Too bad a lot of third-party developers unaffiliated with Canonical are suffering because of this, and further on us users.

Re: What's up with Canonical ?
I chanced upon Canonical’s server outage when looking up information about their LTS releases for another thread here. I considered opening a support thread for it, but upon seeing it failed in Waterfox also, inferred it was a short-term failure on its end and declined to pursue it further. It is always nice to put a name to things.

Re: What's up with Canonical ?
Yeah. Unfortunately sometimes things got ugly names.
Can't say I'm fond of Canonical especially lately, but Launchpad is used by many others that chose to host their projects there, people that at least apparently have no connection whatsoever with Canonical, and I find it unfair and frustrating for them to be punished for no reason. Unless this attack has an entirely different goal than it was stated. I don't quite buy this "islamic team" narrative, and there's a paragraph at the link posted above by @jarsealer that seems to match my suspicion. Not gonna pursue this further

Launchpad is still unreachable here in Australia, despite Canonical posting on social media that all services have been restored
"One hosts to look them up, one DNS to find them and in the darkness BIND them."

Same for me in Eastern Europe. I too read a few comments at the link I posted in first post, that services don't work despite having been announced as fixed/working.

Apparently it's a giant DDoS from an Iranian ransom group: https://www.theregister.com/2026/05/01/ ... /?td=rt-3a
