While combing through YouGov’s collection for figures, I came upon one about how many tabs one keeps open at a time. I thought it would be fun to compare our habits against the man on the Clapham omnibus. I have also got saved a report by Mozilla from 2010, which I have attached here, which gave a median of 2·9 tabs and a mean of 6·6, quartiles 2·2 and 5·6.
Eighteen tabs or so is my rough average, but it can rise and fall as I research topics or collect images I enjoy. I rambled about my tab habits in more detail a year ago, and they have changed little since, although many other things in my life have.

Re: Tab habits, now and then
Most of the time I have "none". Just the "page" I am on if this is considered a tab. Every now and then I do open one tab if someone provides a link to some where or some place on the internet.

Re: Tab habits, now and then
My tab use is "bursty", e.g. when doing a sec audit i open a separate window (or 2) and my tab use easily spikes over 50 in that case, but I'm not counting that use in my answer here. And they are purely temporary. Once done, the extra windows are closed and tabs discarded.

It varies greatly. Especially if I'm dis/counting suspended tabs vs active tabs. It mostly stays around 5 active ones at most I'd say, while I can have up to 30 inactive ones at times. So I chose 6-10 as an average. It always goes down to 0 (homepage) in between though. I don't hoard, I bookmark temporarily and permanently.

Usually some 25 in three windows, mostly restored from the previous session via Session Manager.
Curiously enough, I do not keep a search engine in the navigation bar, nor I keep the DDG page among the tabs, but load it from the bookmark menu (I have a long bookmark menu with several subdirectories, and also a bookmark toolbar with some 6 sub-menu/folder and a few single links.

Re: Tab habits, now and then
I have many tabs only when I'm on some imageboard and I'm tracking multiple threads in parallel, so I put them into their dedicated tab and open anything else either in a different window or in another tab.
Beyond that, if I go above three it's because I'm doing some kind of research and need to cross-check multiple pages.
