Forum rules
The Off-Topic area is a general community discussion and chat area with special rules of engagement.

Enter, read and post at your own risk. You have been warned!
While our staff will try to guide the herd into sensible directions, this board is a mostly unrestricted zone where almost anything can be discussed, including matters not directly related to the project, technology or similar adjacent topics.

We do, however, require that you:
  • Do not post anything pornographic.
  • Do not post hate speech in the traditional sense of the term.
  • Do not post content that is illegal (including links to protected software, cracks, etc.)
  • Do not post commercial advertisements, SEO links or SPAM posts.
We also ask that you keep strongly polarizing topics like politics and religion to a minimum. This forum is not the right place to discuss such things.
Please do exercise some common sense. How you act here will inevitably influence how you are treated elsewhere.

I thought Anubis was meant to keep Indian spambots away. The bomber will always get through.

Anubis is only meant for badly programmed scrapers that don't use JavaScript (or if it does, doesn't keep state for each scraping they do), which is the majority of LLM scrapers for some reason... It won't keep out those that simply use a browser to spam.

These things are the result of slave wage people plugging away at any platform that allows profile or content creation on it. They cant be stopped by automated processes like anubis or CAPTCHAs (both of which are in place on the repo) because they are people creating accounts and then copy/pasting prepared texts.

Unfortunately gitea's tools for dealing with this are limited and the only real way i found to deal with it has been to just do regular cleanup nuking the accounts from orbit.

Yes. Just so much time, energy and resources wasted on duplicating and removing digital junk. I wish it was taxable. Or more realistically i wish egress filtering was a thing.

That too, but I was thinking more about situations some people end up in.

I can't imagine posting in such place gains them much, we don't have much interest from web browsing folks in general (and that's on-topic). Site hosting source code won't attract even many of those interested in browser as it is.

Ah but you see, this has nothing to do with legitimate interest and everything to do with sheer volume so that search engine ranking goes up. They don't care if anyone seeing it cares; they care if search engine bots index it and feed it to the algorithm.

It's called SEO. It's been a thing for a while now...
