RTX 5050 - what do you think?

Post by Piotr Kostrzewski » 2025-08-07, 18:17

Hello, what do you think about the RTX 5050, from what I've seen the tests are not very favorable for this card compared to even the 3050, not to mention the 4060 :)
Moreover, at least in my country, it is not much cheaper than the RTX 5060.

You're better off getting a previous gen card second hand in the same price class, IMHO. It's absolutely terrible value from the reviews I've seen (from e.g. Hardware Unboxed and Gamersnexus). Not that I'm shopping for a new GPU myself at the moment -- my RTX 3060 12G is doing just fine (and I ran a Polaris 8GB RX590 before that which was also decent but not quite enough for running local AI tools at decent speed) -- but I did keep an eye on developments recently; mainly to see how mad they are getting with their pricing.

All I've read is https://www.techopse.com/nvidia-quietly ... rformance/

Which isn't very promising. I'll stick to my RTX 3070 for now.

Get 3050 or 4060 (based on what you want to spend) instead.

I would say it's not worth buying unless you don't have access to an older card, or the older cards you have access to are very, very old. Like, if it's either an RTX 5050, or a GTX 970, then yes, I'd go for the RTX 5050. But if you have access to RTX 40 or RTX 30 series for cheaper, probably not worth it. RTX 5050 starts being worth it if you're upgrading from an RTX 20 series or earlier card, based on what I've seen of the performance.

Another odd quirk to consider is that the RTX 5050 is a PCI-E 5.0 8x card. Meaning that if you're putting it in a machine that isn't 5.0, it will be stuck on either PCI-E 4.0 8x, or worse PCI-E 3.0 8x. So you definitely would only want to use this as an entry level card for newer hardware, and should really try to avoid using it to upgrade an older system if you can.
