When is Pocket shutting down?
Pocket will no longer be available after July 8, 2025.
You can continue using the app and browser extensions until this date. After July 8, Pocket will move into export-only mode. Users can export saves anytime until October 8, 2025, after which user data will be permanently deleted.
Why is Pocket shutting down?
Pocket has helped millions save articles and discover stories worth reading. But the way people use the web has evolved, so we’re channeling our resources into projects that better match their browsing habits and online needs.

Re: Mozilla is shutting down Pocket
So Mozilla says. I will take Mozilla's word on the above "with a grain of salt". Firefox is the default browser in Mint, MX Linux, Debian which I use when these distros are installed on hard drives.moonbat wrote: ↑2025-05-23, 07:16From the horse's mouth.

I always relegated Pocket to the Customize Toolbar when I configured Pocket in Firefox. And I made sure it was disabled in the Configuration Preferences via "about:config" too.

Never bothered with Pocket, but I would imagine that it was a convenience for people to take out saved articles and pages without having to search through the browser history for it...

Re: Mozilla is shutting down Pocket
If it is an article and/or pages I may want to save, I make it a bookmark. This is my convenient way of saving things if and/or when needed for "future reference". It is easier and quicker for me to do it this way than searching through browser history.

I love it when a feature is introduced "Pocket has helped millions", but when the feature is taken away: "the way people use the web has evolved".
So, all those millions have evolved? Good to know.

It should've remained an extension so that only those who want the functionality need install it. One can always bookmark sites as well.

Re: Mozilla is shutting down Pocket
But Mozilla wanted to be able to collect people's bookmarks by running the service. Unfortunately for them, people didn't jump on that service en masse, and that is the reason they are shutting it down, because they don't get enough value from it and they couldn't possibly keep providing a service that actually benefits the user.

It was a poor substitute for what del.icio.us already offered; now Pinboard has bought out that site.

Has Pinboard’s owner ever commented on Pale Moon? From his many speeches decrying the web’s decadence, I gather that he would likely show sympathy towards us.

Don't think he has. It would be great if there was an official extension from his service. Back in the day, Del.icio.us's FF extension used to beautifully integrate with the bookmark manager, and you could even sync tags.

Re: Mozilla is shutting down Pocket
While I do occasionally copy a link for later, my philosophy is that if I don't have time to read an article right now, I probably will never get around to reading it and a service like Pocket is only encouraging a hoarding attitude towards links and webpages.
