Ads are coming to Discord

I have never used discord before, but I am shocked they didn't ship ads already.

I very much assumed they did. If I ever were to use discord, my objection is never the ads persay, but the anti adblock stuff.

I block ads because of trackers and only them. However, I don't use discord, so it doesn't matter to me personally.

I hope they plan to use static ads for their users' sake.

Those have no security issues or malware potential.

a good chunk of the gamers on Discord now used to be Skype users. But there were a few people who got fed up with it and started shouting at everyone to move over to Discord and putting a lot of pressure on everyone, refusing to get on Skype anymore, etc... and eventually the rest of us moved over mostly to follow the stubborn holdouts who had put their foot down and refused to tolerate Skype anymore, and eventually most gamers just stopped using it

Discord took years to catch up with Skype to the extent I wanted, and now that it's finally there for the most part, it seems like they're starting to do stuff that will drive users away to some indie platform yet again... hopefully people stay this time. I'm really tired of hopping platforms just because people want to have these big freak-outs and expect me to care about the things they care about.

I have little sympathy for Discord if it loses loads of users. It stole loads of people away not only from Skype, but also from IRC. And it did all of that while being as unappealing as possible in terms of privacy and such.

Not to mention, as was mentioned earlier it is built upon Google Chrome technology so that's a big nope for me.

Why would I want to use something like that?

It's not necessarily that I like Discord, it's just that it seems like every time people collectively decide to switch platforms, they switch to something that's worse in a lot of ways but seems trendy and cool at the time. So whatever comes after Discord is likely to be worse than Discord, just like Discord was worse than Skype. And it goes without saying that it will be built on Chrome technology.

All things being equal, I wouldn't want to use it. But not using it means I have to be content using platforms that are only used by a handful of tech-savvy individuals, and I don't want to impose that limitation on myself just to avoid dealing with Discord's flaws. You know what I mean? To an extent, staying in the loop does unfortunately require you to "go where the crowd is," even if the crowd has terrible taste.

I'm less sympathizing with Discord, and more sympathizing with myself having to deal with people split over ever more social media platforms, purely because they get emotional and react to unrealistic promises or something, and not because they've found something objectively better with long-term potential. If whatever the "next big thing" is actually does wind up being better than Discord, I'll gladly eat my words, of course.

I don't mean this about anyone here or everyone, just people who have the intelligence and willpower and would lose almost nothing by switching to linux yet still continue to use that trash.

That being said, this kind of stuff I apply to websites that favor google as well. The only thing Google deserves is a swift kick in their pants till they get over themselves and adopt standards that are beneficial for everyone and not just corporations or the already powerful.

I suspect that you are discounting the way that people with intelligence are skilled at working around and with the problems of Windows to make it do what they want and need. But switching to Linux means that existing OS knowledge is discarded as they start over with a new system. To call that losing almost nothing is easy to say while ignoring the real-world realities of many seasoned Windows users.

Well, I think you're making a lot of assumptions there, honestly. You're talking as if modern Linux is vastly superior to modern Windows, discounting all the flaws with it, and implying a moral burden or obligation on people to use Linux in spite of its questionable state. That has always been the problem with the Linux community in my mind. They're incredibly preachy, are too busy throwing stones at Microsoft while ignoring or justifying what's going on their own backyard, and love highlighting alternative distros or obscure technical workarounds that most users couldn't take advantage of anyway as actual solutions. When... in all honesty, longtime Windows users have always wanted something more like a finished ReactOS than something like Linux, and are already serving themselves by using older versions of Windows with lots of workarounds and patches for as long as they can get away with it.

I would go so far as to say that attitude right there, that you're morally entitled to the support of anyone frustrated with Microsoft or Windows, is exactly what people resent about the Linux community and are often alienated by. It's kinda self-righteous, and is not an attitude people want to deal with.

It's like... Linux users just keep preaching at Windows users like they are owed something, but aren't interested in doing anything to accommodate such users on the whole. They don't care about little things like binary compatibility across distros or versions, they don't care that the latest version of glibc keeps breaking things, they don't care about all the proprietary software and services people depend on, telling people to just be satisfied with a half-busted FOSS purist mess of an OS that is a pain to use and reflects a very specific set of ideals that aren't what most former Windows users are looking for, offering little more than crushing guilt and a sense of duty to "the rebellion" as a justification for why they should tolerate such an inferior experience.

Linux users have been peddling this same tired old narrative since at least 2003, nothing to offer but guilt, ideals, and some vague promise of technological salvation if we'll just accept Richard Stallman and his ideology as the savior of our computer. It's almost like people would rather live their lives with a big corporation being somewhat greedy but letting them focus on just doing work after taking their money and privacy, rather than have to deal with preachy , angry idealists who demand service and sacrifice with the promise of some reward or pay off far into the future. The fact that Linux users and advocates cannot understand why that is, and continue to talk about Linux as if it is "the answer," just going on and on about how there's "a distro for that" to every possible objection anyone might bring up, just shows how they don't understand the perspective of people who aren't happy with what's on offer or why they don't see it as the answer they've been looking for.

Unfortunately you are insulting people by saying that. You're insulting their intelligence, accuse them of having no individuality (blindly go where the crowd is) and assume they have the resources (time and mental headroom) to switch from what they have spent years/decades creating a comfortable and efficient workflow in, to something that is pretty much alien by design where they'd have to start creating a new workflow.

Also, your assertion that people would "lose almost nothing" is quite false. They would lose their entire toolbox of carefully-selected tools to do their work, to be replaced with what feels like half-assed knock-offs (GIMP comes to mind as a prime example) that simply don't get the work done, while at the same time having to deal with a GUI-hostile environment that can't reasonably be operated on intuition and affordance.
Now maybe that's not an issue if all you do is browse the web, but most people who actually do work or create things will run into that pretty hard wall.

Must I say this again, I was not talking about everyone. I am talking about the stubborn ones. I never said anyone here was stupid. Also, I am aware some people have no choice but to use windows because of job, or whatever. Also, if you use it in a VM disconnected from the internet, I understand that as well. That is the only reason I ever use it now.

Btw, one of the blessings of linux is the permission structure is built better. On windows, last I checked, everything you see on a website is marked executable on windows. That can lead to ransomware hell or just a hacked computer. Has that been fixed yet?

Also, linux can be very fast even on a very old thinkpad like mine. T430 is a quad core ivy bridge. 2012~ computer. You can say I am entitled if you want, but the more hardware that gets infected, the more likely the hardware graveyard grows. I simply don't understand why anyone would want to support a corporation that is causing climate change to increase by their offshore data centers in other countries using water to cool those data centers off. Google, microsoft, apple, facebook need to be starved of data. Also, the hardware graveyard is another reason this problem happens. But if you are saying mainstream linux is a problem, debian, ubuntu, fedora, archlinux for example, I will admit, those suck, because they keep adding new trash to bloat them up. systemd is not the only thing.

Yeah, I was not aware of such a concept, I was not aware this started on windows. I had forgotten about that.

By flaws do you mean all those bloated linux frameworks? If so, yes that is definitely a problem. Windows is still much more of a wasteland of bloat though. Besides which, windows 10 and 11 and beyond have forced upgrades?! That is beyond stupid... the users deserve better than that. What happens if an upgrade happens that borks your operating system on windows 10? I have seen people complain about it online and how they lost a lot of their work and have to reinstall all over again.

Correct, but I detest windows, macosx, chromeos and similar much more.

For me, linux is a 5 out of 10.

Windows was maybe a 1 before windows 10 and now I can't even say its a zero its so bad.

MacosX and ChromeOS are similar to the above

Bloatware whether its on proprietary hardware, proprietary software, open source hardware, open source software, or even libre software or libre hardware, its all bad either way.
