Messenger Lite No Longer Works

Post by suzyne » 2023-10-06, 01:12

I have an old Android tablet, on which I used Messenger Lite because it worked smoother than the full version. Today I got the message below and, naturally, when I go to the Play Store, Messenger is no longer available for my android version. Thanks, Meta!

Facebook has been really awful about pulling support for older mobile operating systems. They pulled support for Windows Phone a full year before the official end of support, seemingly just out of spite, after I'd been using it for 8 years or so. The old version could still get the messages (and push notifications) just fine, they just arbitrarily made it stop working because "not supported" with an annoying splash screen.

The only way I was able to use Facebook messenger during my last year on Windows Phone was by pointing a web browser at Facebook's mobile website for messenger, which is so awful you have to manually refresh the page to see if you've gotten new messages. If you can access that website, it would probably work for you too, but that's probably the most you'll get now that your OS has fallen out of support.
"The Athenians, however, represent the unity of these opposites; in them, mind or spirit has emerged from the Theban subjectivity without losing itself in the Spartan objectivity of ethical life. With the Athenians, the rights of the State and of the individual found as perfect a union as was possible at all at the level of the Greek spirit." -- Hegel's philosophy of Mind

Perhaps ancient would have been a better description? It's 4.4.2. KitKat.
