I'm looking for Windows Explorer replacement.

Post by Piotr Kostrzewski » 2023-06-26, 14:31

Hello,
I chose one application but maybe someone knows another application that I might like.
I want to be able to browse folders in tabs.
Have a nice day,
Piotrek

I chose one application
Which?

Altap Salamander
(Depending on your definition of, "I want to be able to browse folders in tabs" [like a tree on the left, kind of thing], Salamander does not do that.)

File Explorer replacement recommendations?

That's interesting, it's free software with a GPL license. I wonder if it could be built on GNU/Linux. The build instructions are only for Windows, but some smart hacker will probably figure it out. Looks like a good file manager with good features, you should probably stick with it.

If you have dual monitors using separate windows (open in new window) instead of tabs works better.

Explorer++ might fit the bill

Total Commander (previously known as Windows Commander) - it's the first program installed on any of my computers since Windows came up (I was using Norton Commander on DOS - TC's layout is based on NC). I can't stand the default Windows file thingy - it's virtually useless for me.
Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!

I contemplated suggesting Total Commander which is my go-to for file management, but the question was specifically for a tabbed interface which TC doesn't do, as it's panel-based (like the old Norton Commander for DOS)

TC can do tabbed layout now, as well (since v8, AFAIR). I don't use it, but it's there.

For file management, I am happy with Free Commander. (It can do tabs too.)

Laptop 2: Windows 10 32-bit, Atom Z3735F @ 1.33GHz, 2GB, Intel HD Graphics.
Laptop 3: Linux Mint 20.3 64-bit, i5 @ 2.5GHz, 8GB, Intel HD Graphics 620.

Thank you very much. I got it yesterday and I'm testing it. Ctrl+T opens a new tab right?

Yes, but I tend to use the mouse more, and so right click on the current tab to bring up a pop-up menu.

Tabs have been available in TC for a long time, at least since v7 something. Used it since before the year 2000 with Windows from 95 to 7, and still have it at hand in Linux under Wine.

If the nag screen and/or other limitations might disturb one could always try the free/open-source Double Commander which is very similar to TC. It also has Linux, Mac, FreeBSD versions. I am using it now daily in Linux Mint (the Gtk2 version due to some missing plug-ins for the Qt version which I'd rather prefer).

or, you know, give the developer a one-time license payment for an AWESOME piece of software. Unlike some *cough autodesk cough* he won't be changing a true lifetime licence overnight to a subscription

My apologies. You are absolutely right. It was my intention to mention that but got sidetracked. Total Commander is indeed an awesome piece of software - no doubt about that.
