Hypnospace Outlaw Video Game

Unread post by Basilisk-Dev » 2023-02-05, 04:37

I recently played a video game called Hypnospace Outlaw and figured I'd share it here because I know many of us have been using the internet for a long time. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, but this really grabbed my attention after a friend mentioned it to me.

The game takes place at the end of 1999/beginning of 2000. You are a moderator for a company called Merchantsoft for their Hypnospace head band, which is basically a headband that allows you to browse the internet while you're sleeping. The entire game is themed around browsing late 90s/early 2000s sites and looking for content that violates the rules of the service.

I highly recommend the game for most of the people I have spoken to here on the forums. Even if you're not a gamer, if you're nostalgic for the late 90s/early 2000s internet I believe you will have a good time. Everything about the game brings me back to when I was a young kid, browsing the early internet with Netscape on our dial-up internet connection. It has it all. Marquees, blinking text, sites with MIDI playing in the background, etc.

It's available DRM-free on GOG and it's also on Steam. Here's a link to the (in my opinion very attractive) official website.

Yeah, I saw that a demo for this game was available on the Nintendo Switch.

I played the demo. It was really neat and interesting. I felt an absolute rush of nostalgia playing it.

I've actually been meaning to pick it up the full game now for months, but if possible I would prefer to get a physical copy. Given the nature and context of the game, I wouldn't be against getting it the other way if no physical copy is available.

You can get a physical copy for the Switch from here. As far as I know sadly there is no physical PC version. The game is really meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard, the Switch version does work with a USB mouse and keyboard thankfully.
