Queen Elizabeth II has passed away.

She apparently passed away about an hour ago, at Balmoral Castle. It's strange to think that she's gone... she's one of the few faces I've seen among world leaders my entire life. It is probably the most tragic thing to happen regarding the royal family since the death of Princess Diana.
"The Athenians, however, represent the unity of these opposites; in them, mind or spirit has emerged from the Theban subjectivity without losing itself in the Spartan objectivity of ethical life. With the Athenians, the rights of the State and of the individual found as perfect a union as was possible at all at the level of the Greek spirit." -- Hegel's philosophy of Mind

Well, now I can say I went through three popes, two emperors (in Japan) and the longest queendom in history.

Jokes aside it is the end of an era for the UK, it is truly a different kind of event and feeling.

Louis XIV retains his record of the longest ruling king in history, by 2 years.

There's some cool old pics online of her checking out computers and communication equipment.

She reigned pretty much throughout the age of computers.

I'm not a Royalist by any stretch of the imagination, nor am I British.
Still, I'm genuinely feeling sad that Her Majesty the Queen (everyone knows exactly who you mean when saying that, without even saying her name - that is saying something!) has passed. I regarded her as a very amicable figurehead for the countries she represented, and she has always been a voice of reason and groundedness, IMHO.

She was a living face of European history; she was on the throne before most of us were even born, and one of the few constants in country leadership circles throughout my entire life.
She was more than representing UK, she was a big part of the whole concept of a United Kingdom.

I have to say, 96 years is a hell of an age to live to, especially in leadership! I wish King Charles all the best in his new role going forward.
