Steve's Ravens

Post by stevenpusser » 2022-01-27, 23:22

off-topic, but my daytime wild animal taming project is ravens, and I have four that are now familiar with me and will approach if I wave them in, including one that will come up within a few feet on the ground, then follow me around like a duck. They also seem to want more than just treats, but some things that will amuse and entertain them. They will hop toward loose dogs in hope of getting them to chase them if they are bored, too. Food will be more of a priority in a couple months when they have chicks in the nest and then following them around--usually the fledglings are even more trusting if the parents introduce them..

There is a big flock (~60 or so) of feral Mexican red-fronted Amazon Parrots that just moved into the neighborhood, but they don't seem to want to interact with people very much.

@stevepusser: Off-topic... On-topic living with ravens/rooks/corvids... You might enjoy a book I came across about a decade ago here in Scotland. Not my usual reading fare so it was probably read in abridged form, by the author IIRC, as a 'Book of the Week' on the BBC's speech radio network in the UK, the eponymous 'Radio 4'.

So you might just find that old recorded version archived somewhere in the BBC's online (free) back catalogue now all re-branded as 'BBC Sounds' to attract the 'yoofs'... some independent radio archives out there too, and of course there's WayBackMachine. Original broadcast probably c. 2009/2010?

As ever IMHO, the real unabridged book much better 'Corvus' - A Life with Birds - Esther Woolfson (2009), good Scottish writer, good reviews for book. Several cover versions, my paperback has this artwork:

The coat of arms of my home town, Lisbon, is a ship and two ravens.

Thanks, I'll try and find copies. I've read Bernd Heinrich's classics, The Mind of the Raven and The Raven in Winter.

Marcus, if those are normal ravens on the arms, we're gonna need a bigger boat! ;)

After I read this post I heard a funny TV report about the idea to train masses of ravens (crows, ... corvii) as public cleaners. I've seen documentaries about their intelligence and once an old man in the neighbourhood found one and trained him to do little tricks, but if they were only half as intelligent, they would surely refuse to care about all the waste that humans leave in their environment :)
