What browser do you use on mobile and why

Post by Disil07 » 2022-01-22, 14:23

Title says it all. For me I use 'heavily tweaked' Firefox 68.11.0 on Android. I use those because after the redesign 'Fenix' it becomes unusable, with tabs constantly unloading when I left the app for even 1 second.

Firefox, Iceraven. Because they are the only browsers that are not chromium-based.

I used the DuckDuckGo browser for a while but an increasing number of problems with it (like sessions terminating unexpectedly requiring re-login to sites) had me switch to Chrome instead. Not that I actually use my mobile to browse, but when I'm forced to, I didn't see a point in having to hunt for something that didn't bork the very rare occasions I need a browser on my phone. If you use it hardly ever, you want it to "just work" when you do.

Via is based on the Android's built-in WebView renderer. It is light and does not eat eons of internal storage.

Via
I use it for a long time, since it was introduced, until recently where the (only) dev is not receiving any kind of suggestions anymore, even on his Twitter account (he says that he's active on Twitter everyday). Also it doesn't have search suggestions so that's a toggle off for me.

I use Iceraven because it supports extensions, so I have uBO installed on it.

Don't have to imagine, Pale Moon for Android lasted till around version 25 or so. Discontinued because nobody else was able to take over and maintain it.

Also, on iOS it wouldn't be possible because Apple hard-locks any web capable app to webkit. You literally cannot use Goanna (or Gecko, for that matter -- Firefox on iOS is front-end only) so there will never be a UXP on iOS.

As far as I knew Iceraven has not been updated for a while, the latest update is in November 2021. I personally also use Fennec F-droid, basically firefox without telemetry.

Edit: if you need extension, you can use custom addons collection with latest Firefox/Fennec (most of AMO addons will work.) Why you still use Iceraven if the reason is for extensions?

How does it matter? You don't need to follow the demented 'major release every fortnight' pace just because it has been set by Google. I've had no problem opening sites and all of them have been pre sanitized of ads and tracking crap courtesy uBO. Iceraven also supports more extensions than the heavily castrated Firefox/Fennec which as usual was turned to shit after version 68.

As far as I knew Fennec also support those, not just the 'curated' one. You just need to add custom addons collections in AMO. Although still, you need to create account in AMO for creating custom collections.

In general though, all Firefox based browser since 79 (Fenix) is shit. This also include Iceraven. Why? The WebExtension development for the redesign has been stalled for a while now, so less extensions are compatible with them.

Like everything else about them 8-)

Then again I don't use the mobile browser much so uBO,Dark Reader and redirect AMP to HTML are all that I use.

This one is sweet because it mantains compatibility with websites, at least most of them.

All browsers on iPhone are using the same built-in WebKit rendering engine, as it is a requirement by Apple for it to be on iOS. There are no truly different browsers on there, the only difference is the skin/UI on top of it.

I try not to browse on a phone (iPhone iOS 15.3) as I particularly miss being able to block javascripts in a controlled manner. :(

For me best compromise on an iPhone is using Apple's own Safari browser with AdGuard's free content blocker App which is designed to work with Safari (AdGuard - adblock&privacy). AdGuard's free selection of filter lists is surprisingly good.
