Post by cartel » 2026-04-18, 08:14

Why should I have to lower my security to bow down to cloudflare?
the past week it seems everyone is flocking to this pile of garbage company
this is ridiculous!

I opened up a tab, found the address, put it in my Navigation (address) Toolbar, tapped my Enter key and went straight to the site without encountering the CF challenge. I even surfed around on the site a little.

At the time of this post I am using 64 bit (GTK2) linux Pale Moon 34.2.0 running in 64 bit MX Linux 25.1 (Infinity) Xfce with the standard default settings for uBlock Origin 1.16.6.1 enabled for the site.

A lot of hosting providers offer Cloudflare for free and it's often just ticking a checkbox or pressing a button to activate it. No configuration step, it's all automatic.
When a site is swarmed and crawls to a halt, and all it takes to protect it is pressing a button, underpaid sysadmins on tight deadlines aren't going to question the morality of the system.
Of course, the tinfoil hat theory is that those swarms are performed by Cloudflare itself...

Yeah, I found that out last week when Cloudflare was out.
I have never had a cloudflare crap on any of the forums I visit.
I have always gone straight to the pages.
Never n many years have I known they were using cloudflare.

All of my forums except Pale Moon and Trisquel have moved to Cloudflare. That was the impetus for the "Is the internet still useful nowadays?" thread recently.

I've asked about this some time ago and it seems it's not that these websites were not using Cloudflare before.

They have now increased Cloudflare's "security level" (let's call it Level 2) or whatever it is, that enforces the highly buggy, invasive check.

En masse switching from "Level 1 security" to "Level 2" is due to massive bot activity, apparently.

While everybody else has been migrating to Cloudflare, one website I find most helpful, but would rather not name here, installed Hcaptcha a few days ago instead of Cloudflare, which it had hitherto used. I have not noticed any more sites than usual going behind Cloudflare, although I have been switching VPN servers a lot lately to find one which tends not to trigger them, something I am used to doing sometimes as a matter of course.

I'd be here forever but the fatigue is real and its not just pale moon. any browser set up "securely" is a problem to cloud flail.
I been uploading these screenshots to instagram and @cjponyparts @partsgeek no business for you? because I'm not supporting these companies. and they obviously arent realizing they are losing tons of money.

Next time, would you "please" type in the clickable address/links to the sites you are having problems with. Makes things go faster and easier.

The first site you listed (Telegraph) is one I could get to, but the page which came up did not render properly so I didn't put a screenshot to it. But the others gave me no problems and on only one did I get the CF challenge.

Both of those sites are extremely similar and may actually be operated by the same company.
Maybe you could use their contact form to ask them to stop using CF so you can access the site.

@ cartel

Thanks for providing the links. It's appreciated.

I did not click on the Google link. I clicked on the other two links and they work for me. I did not get the CF challenge on either of them. Keep in mind I do not "lock down" my Pale Moon like some users do.

At this time I am using 64 bit (GTK2) linux Pale Moon 34.2.2 running in 64 bit MX Linux 25.1 (Infinity) Xfce.

thanks for the replies. I just wanna say I'm not taking this out on PM or anyone here.
I'm trying to find oem parts and its getting very difficult.
these sites like eastgate show parts I need with a discount price compared to the local dealers.
But when you try to buy the part it errors out.
I think it was a filler neck for my crown vic. So I phoned them and asked wtf is going on and they said the part is discontinued..(of course it is right?).
So I said well you're baiting people then? She didnt like that but hey, thats what you are doing. I'm spending hours of my time comparing prices and looking up factory part numbers and you say its there and show a "add to cart" button. but its not there.

So I dont know if she reeeee'd and blocked me somehow or what but almost every site I run into now has this verify crap. Its super annoying and if I use PM it just crashes so I'm using chrome but even thats an issue.
And cloudflare seems to punish me for having tight security. I want webGL off, I want 3rd party frames off.
I spent alot of time and effort to make stuff as secure as I can and it wasnt a problem till the last year or so and then say the last 6 months its just gone full potato. everyone and their goat is on cloudflare and I have a right to secure my browser is a huge issue with CF quite obviously.

on top of that theres all these sites just trying to rob people blind
a $2 C clip they want 84$ for? 84USD no less!
I phoned them and asked wtf are you doing? when I see that, I'll never buy anything from you. the guy just kept trying to pivot around the fact.
they actually took my advice and removed the listing but what are people thinking these days.
super frustrating.

cloudflare makes this nightmare even worse and how can you sell parts if people cant even get to the page?
its crazy

I know you want webGL off and 3rd party frames off. But sometimes when you cannot get what you want, you might have to ease off your settings for specific sites. Right now, if your settings are too rigid, then Pale Moon will not do what you want. This is why I sent you those attachments because my Pale Moon settings are different than your's.

But in order to get what you want, you just might have to compromise. By compromise, if CF is causing you a major headache with Pale Moon, for those sites you want to get to, a backup browser is an easy solution.

When CF blocks me from getting to a site I need to go to, then I just use my Waterfox backup browser. As an example, Flightradar24 is a site I used to keep track of my youngest niece since her job involves traveling to many different states such as California, Arizona, Washington, Illinois, Ohio, Boston, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama. BTW, she lives in Colorado so she catches her flights at Denver.

She sends me her airline designation and flight number. As I said before, I used to use Pale Moon to track her flight on Flightradar24. But now FR24 does not work in Pale Moon anymore. All I get is a page which does not render properly. So now I use Waterfox to access the site to track her commercial flight.

https://www.flightradar24.com/

The above is just "food for thought". The screenshot below is Flightradar24 showing the state of Colorado using Waterfox.

Out of interest, how much of a bot problem do you have on this forum and what non-CF steps do you take to stop it? It seems like a bunch of sites are taking the view nowadays that without CF, bots will just destroy any forum put on the public internet.

The bot problem on this forum has been primarily AI scrapers causing heavy load. I'm using anubis now to have a hands-free solution, but previously filtered things in nginx (where rate-limiting wouldn't be effective, that is -- in most cases it is all that's needed).
So, there are several ways to tackle the bot problem: use CF, use a different CDN/reverse proxy, use a local bot challenge solution, or use some reactive filtering and rate limiting in whatever web front-end you are using.

Well there's yer problem. The Blob can't have people thinking that repairing stuff is allowed; that way lies personal sovereignty and self-sufficiency. Those are not compatible with The Plan.

Cloudflare slows my online world down to a crawl on some sites, particularly mobile sites that use it. On one watch sites forum it can take 10 minutes to pass sometimes with the mobile phone (teracube 2e running eOS). Probably due to my use of lots of security.

When PM hits a CF road block Abrowser (Firefox) is used. Yes more and more forums are using Cloudflare and those captcha things, 'thou shalt not pass' - until you play a little game. Grrrrr. And what exactly is happening while their little wheel spins ? How much telemetry are they grabbing ?

They can take so long to pass that it must be slowing online business down a tad. soon you may not be able to enter physical shops without a cloudflare check. 'Sorry pal it says you're a malicious robot, shop elsewhere please.'

Indeed. It can take anything from 2-5 minutes (!) just to pass the CF challenge.

One has to wonder, as they now appear to require googles Performance Observer API (something that was sadly needed to be enabled by default in PM a few updates ago).. Which is a privacy nightmare, and not even intended for front usage on a live site.
