YouTube Now Forcing Visitors To Sign In To View Videos

Post by Night Wing » 2026-03-23, 14:06

I hope this is the correct forum to put this post into. If not have someone in authority please put this post in the correct forum.

I just got a rude awakening this morning after viewing some videos on YouTube. After reviewing a longboard surfing video, I went to another video below and got a surprise as a prompt popped up before the start of the video with a message stating I must sign in to view the video to make sure I was not a "bot".

I am sure this this is more to do with "age verification" which is going on to safeguard children. But I also have a sneaking suspicion this is YouTube's another new way to "acquire" more of your own personal data and to force you into not using an adblocker so you have no choice but to view their irrelevant ads.

Is anyone else getting this?

I would assume that is the most likely answer.

Just to make sure this wasn't just targeted at Pale Moon, I'm getting the same "sign in" prompt when using Waterfox and Firefox.

I just watched about 7 videos in a row with no such pop-up or log-in requirements. I am however using a mobile UA as i hate the bloated mess of full YT.

Give this a shot for general.useragent.override.youtube.com Mozilla/5.0 (Android 13; Mobile; rv:109.0) Gecko/114.0 Firefox/114.0

As you can see i’m not signed in when i open the menu.

I have six other hard drives. Three of them are using MX Linux and three of them are using Debian. Those six hard drives can play YouTube videos in Pale Moon, Waterfox and Firefox even though I am not signed in and I do not have a YouTube account per say. But all of my "seven" hard drives for YouTube are set up the same way. It is just this seventh hard drive using MX Linux that is giving me this problem.

My guess is, someone at YouTube or worse, some "unintelligent AI bot" at YouTube is trying to determine what is a bot and what is not a bot and they have made a mistake. If this is a mistake and not some deliberate scheme to get people to sign in.

My next door neighbor has a Gmail account and so do I. He told me since Google owns YouTube, I should be able to play videos using the Google sign in. My neighbor tried using his Gmail account sign in and he got in to play videos. Well, I tried that and it refuses the sign in for me.

Just visited YouTube on my MX Linux distro where Pale Moon would not play any videos earlier today because YT thought I was a bot and wanted me to "sign in" to prove I was not a bot. But I did not get the "sign it" prompt. :o The video began playing.

So I tried a couple more videos and Pale Moon played them all. Then I used Waterfox and the same thing happened. The videos began playing. I thought to myself I was on a roll. 8-) Maybe the "third time was the charm" and I used Firefox. And the videos began playing.

The odd thing about all of this. I "never" changed any of the settings I made in Pale Moon, Waterfox or Firefox. My only guess is, there must have been a glitch at YT which caused havoc for me earlier this morning. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope this does not happen again.

Nonsense like this is among the reasons why I refuse ever to visit YouTube direct. As Invidious has become less reliable in the last few months (at the time of writing, all three instances fail), I have found myself, for the most part, content to go without. If I feel like it, browsing the Internet Archive’s film collection has served me nicely. A while ago, Moonchild warned that YouTube ought not be treated as an archive. He is right, and the pains Google imposes prove it was always unwise to rely on it. Better for internet archival to rely on the obvious.

This happens regularly, somewhere between 2:00 and 4:00 AM UTC, sometimes a little later.
Logging into Gmail in a different tab solves the problem, but it's clear the servers are heavily loaded, and videos start playing with a noticeable delay around the specified time. So, this isn't a whim on YouTube's part, but a genuine attempt to reduce the load. I don't know if this is due to the influx of users or some internal, planned activity on YouTube's servers.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this is because of AI?

It's possible it has something to do with AI processing...
I don't remember exactly when this problem first appeared. It seems like several years ago. But I clearly remember that up to a certain point this problem did not arise.

YouTube was publicly released in the year 2005. If my memory is correct, I have been visiting YouTube since the year 2010 with Comcast since Comcast is my ISP. And I signed up as a customer of Comcast in the year 1983 which now encompasses 43 years.

As far as I know, I have had the exact same IP address with Comcast since 2010. YouTube's AI bot should have seen my IP address has not changed since 2010. Or is the AI bot YouTube is using, not very intelligent?

No, no that's not what I meant. I meant Google being subject to overload because of AI scraping by others ;)

It was the same for myself a few weeks ago. It became normal again later on the same day. Just checked a video now on PM and Abrowser and they're both playing OK. I don't have a YouTube account.

My experience on (stock) YouTube; freeze, lag, not responding, the interruptions popup... And now that I'm typing here, the browser slowly follows my keystrokes at the rate of maybe two letters per second.

You people can YouTube on Pale Moon without making the browser unsusable in process? Though videos play normally without having to login between otherwise laggy UI navigations.

If this affects Invidious instances, it might explain why I have found Invidious less reliable in the last few weeks, since these happen to correspond to the times when I am most likely to try to watch something on Invidious when I am in the States. Thanks for the tip!

I remember the time mostly for the great Nitter instance massacre, which happened to coincide with the API changes which extinguished Teddit. Gah, this was already almost three years ago… The web moves fast.

This is peculiar as I was able to play a video just now without signing in.

Location and AI probably have something to do with this given my being able to watch a video without signing in.

I am never signed in to YouTube even though I should be able to since I have a Gmail account. But I view YouTube and view my videos in the highest definition mode I can get if the video offers it using my two desktop tower computers. Both tower computers have plenty of "oomph" to handle whatever YouTube is now offering.

I have Comcast as my ISP so I have plenty of download speed and the Intel i7 processors in both towers have plenty of processor speed (3.40 & 3.60) No lagging, no buffering, no ads (since I use uBlock Origin 1.16.6.1 with the permissions for YT in the Permissions Manager), no keyboard problems, lots of memory and both desktops are cool temperature wise.

The backup tower desktop has a decent graphics card, but my main desktop tower (Montech case), has a very good graphics card. Lots of people on here have seen me post my specifications on the Montech case. I will post it again, but then I will get on my backup tower and post it's specifications. I will try and edit this post and hope I can. If I cannot, I will make another post just showing the specs on my backup tower desktop.

In the end, there are a lot of factors why some people have problems viewing YouTube if they are using Pale Moon. But at the shop where I hang out at, customers viewing YouTube with Firefox, Edge and even Chrome browsers, they too have problems because of the factors I listed above with their computers.

Slow download speed from their ISP, old processors with slow processor speeds, not enough memory, graphics chips (if a laptop) and graphics cards (for a tower computer) not good enough, etc, etc.
MX Linux 25.1 (Infinity) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 13.4 (Trixie) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

Just before I left for work 3 days ago, I remember having to check a captcha on YT. Hasn't happened before and hasn't happened the whole time today either.
"Judge a person not by their superficial identity attributes, but by the content of their character."
"Organized Identity Politics are the bane of civilized society."
"Cognitive dissonance hypocrisy is a pandemic."
"Capitalism is the worst form of economic system, except for all the others."

The keyboard input problem is different today. I guess the difference is in what I have opened in addition to YouTube. Now there are just periods when it stops responding for few seconds. The yesterday's problem resolved itself after closing the YouTube tab.
