Recruited a new user to Pale Moon in real life.

Unread post by athenian200 » 2024-12-22, 02:19

So, I was recently in a situation where I went to tutor my older Vietnamese friend in English, but instead he brought an old laptop and asked for computer help, which we spent all our time on instead. He said he hadn't used his laptop for years, and had been relying on his phone. He wanted to dust it off and use it, and wanted to know if I could get YouTube working for him.

I looked at his computer, and he's running Windows 8. With Firefox 29, Internet Explorer, and some old version of Chrome. None of which were able to render modern YouTube. The laptop only has 4GB of RAM. So, I downloaded the 32-bit version of Pale Moon onto his computer, and sure enough YouTube worked fine on it. I pretty much told him to just use Pale Moon from now on.

It was a really interesting experience. I was probably the only person that could have helped him, because I was one of the few people that actually used Windows 8 extensively rather than sticking to Windows 7, so I was able to setup a lot of things he needed that are done differently on that OS than on either Windows 7 or Windows 10. And probably only a handful of people know there is a browser that still supports Windows 8 and runs tolerably in 4GB of RAM.

I wonder if this is a bit like how the people who used to recruit Firefox users felt back in the day? Anyway, just wanted to share the experience, and let people know that I still think about Pale Moon a lot.
"The Athenians, however, represent the unity of these opposites; in them, mind or spirit has emerged from the Theban subjectivity without losing itself in the Spartan objectivity of ethical life. With the Athenians, the rights of the State and of the individual found as perfect a union as was possible at all at the level of the Greek spirit." -- Hegel's philosophy of Mind

That's a neat story! Great that you could get their "must have" website working for them on that older laptop with Pale Moon. Thanks for letting us know of your success.

I tried to get my mother to use Pale Moon, but she rather has laggy videos in Firefox. :\ That was a while ago, nut sure if Firefox works any better with subsequent updates. Back then I had to disable HW acceleration in Firefox as it was broken so badly with an update that audio was all messed up. I don't remember exact age of laptop, must be around 5 years, 4 GB of RAM, some poor onboard Intel graphics adapter. I installed Win10 1909 on it back then.

I would install MS Edge for him. I like Pale Moon, but it is more for the advanced user, the fan who will spend his time to find workarounds for many sites. MS Edge is native to Windows, I have not met any sites that would refuse to work in version 109, and YouTube works much faster.

Pale Moon is good, but not for Youtube. Try some Chromium instead. I personally use 360chrome, but for general users it may be that Supermium is better.
