Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
Hi lads.
Long time user of Palemoon and am enjoying it thanks.
Recently upgraded to Linux Mint 22 Wilma from the previous version simply because the later kernels to my limited understanding would better support new hardware
Did a clean fresh install of LM22 Wilma then proceeded to look for Palemoon for linux again, and at first, was a bit confused simply because I just did not know what some things meant, for example, should I choose a GTK2 or GTK3 version and why, and also, is there a difference to installing Palemoon as opposed to running it from the unpacked folder.
Since LM22, as reported in the System information, uses GTK v: 3.24.41 I chose to use a GTK3 install of Palemoon.
My experience with this install led to finally understanding that the downloads section is correct - Palemoon does in fact work without the need to install it, however it would be helpful to have one more additional piece of setup information as found at: How to Install Pale Moon with its Linux Tarball (Beginners Guide) https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/20 ... ers-guide/
The reason being that inexperienced people may come across this same issue: just by running PM from the extracted folder means there is a need to Add Pale Moon into start menu or overview search result because without it as i found, Pm would not be set as default browser and could not be pinned to the panel and is not listed as an app in the system.
With respect to the guide linked above, is it possible to either create a tutorial at the Palemoon Linux download link or make a link to the install guide for this might help others.?
With the upgrade to LM22 there is one issue with Palemoon that has arisen from an old issue:- youtube!. I have downloaded and tried several older versions and the current Pm version and all experience a browser hang / timeout only when playing a youtube video - this was not an issue in previous version of Linux Mint. This issue is present with or without the only addon i use - uBlock origin. I would be happy to help out find what might be the cause - what steps should i take to find the issue? thanks
Attached are 2 files - sys info and PM troubleshoot info page, if there is any other info i need to extract am heppy to help out.
cheers

For the app section, you might need to create .desktop files at the right place.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
@ Pregio03
At the time of this posting I am using linux Pale Moon (33.3.0).
I am also one who does "not" install 64 bit Pale Moon (GTK2 which I prefer) in any of the three linux distros which you can see in my signature. I just download the GTK2 tarball, extract the Pale Moon folder and place it in a folder where I want it.
Then I add a launcher icon on my Panel. From there I go through the motions to create a path from where the Pale Moon folder is and also create the launcher icon using the Image Files in Pale Moon.
Since I am not a power user in linux I prefer to do it this way because I am not a fan of using the linux Terminal. I only use the Terminal when I am boxed into a corner and the Terminal is the only choice left when to me when all else fails.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
So, by having system monitor open with the normal many other tabs open in PM, system is running fine, open a youtube video then what happens next is the swap file gets filled to 100%, the memory gets filled and cpu usage spikes a bit on a couple of cores. Interestingly, i have a 33 gig swap partition but system monitor shows only a 2.1g swap file as seen in the attached cropped screenshots.....
so now realising the system is reporting to only use a 2.1g swap file am going to look into this to increase the swap file size as well as take on board looking into the about:memory area cheers

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
How many tabs do you have open which is "normal" for you? For the YouTube video, I do not see a "link" to a youtube video" so I am going to guess you did not provide a link for any youtube video.
Also for YouTube videos, there are definition modes such as 360, 720, 1440, 2160. These video settings will put a strain on your system specifically "graphics", memory and CPU.
Watching a YT video in a high definition mode such as 2160p50 4K HD is going to put a strain on any system so when I watch a 2160 video with this high mode, I do "not" have any other tabs open.
My system is below so you can compare your system to mine. No need for a text file. I'll do it using Mint's System Reports which is: Menu > System > System Reports > System Information.
Then I will see "if" I can make another message to you showing a high definition YT video while using my System Monitor. And this is a big "if" because I do not watch HD videos with any other tabs open or using any utility programs like System Monitor.

Here is the link to a Haley Otto surfing video where I copied her popup before I had my back surgery. This surgery allowed me to keep me surfing using her pop-up. The video is being seen in 2160p50 4K high definition mode and there was no buffering/stuttering when I watched this video.

Below is the screenshot showing my System Monitor when the video was playing. Keep in mind I did "not" have any other tabs open.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
Hey Night Wing,
thanks for the replies.
I had a little bit of time this afternoon so did this:
increased swap file to 16G
then had several tabs open , which for me is normal, system is fine and stable, can even open a youtube tab, BUT,
as soon as the youtube media player begins, does not matter which youtube video or channel it is, all video is at 480p low res,
triggers a quick rise in cpu usage, memory and swap file usage - so am thinking it could possibly be some script function or call causing it...
in another thread
" I have 32GB of RAM, its definitely not that.
The issue i have is that lately i have to restart palemoon constantly because it starts to using a lot of CPU and start lagging (like, every 10-20 second browser stop responding for 1-2 seconds, completely, not only web pages, the interface too). Restarting fixes that for some time, but some dozens of tabs opened/closed later it comes back. And i cant figure which website triggers this. And when this starts closing tabs doesnt help, only browser restart is."
seems to be similar issue, " ghost windows".

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
@ Pregio03
When it comes to Swap. Most people I know who use linux distros, when they install a distro on bare metal, they like to use, "swap to file". But I am different which means sometimes I will not go with "conventional wisdom".
I started using Mint back in early 2013. When I loaded it back then, I never created a Swap file and have not created a Swap file since that time. You can see that in my System Monitor when I was viewing the surfing video in 2160p50 4 K high definition mode. The Swap is at "zero".
I never created a Swap file since I have 32 GB of memory just like you have. With that amount of memory I figured I would not have any problems not having a Swap file and I have not. But I am in the minority when it comes to Swap. Most linux people who install a linux distro, they will create "Swap to file" and will not choose "no Swap".
As for tabs, I do not have a lot of tabs open when I am using Pale Moon. Most of the time, I have one tab open and that is it. The only tab, for the want of a better term, I have open now is the Pale Moon Forums site.
Instead of tabs, I use bookmarks and those bookmarks are placed in folders on my Bookmarks Toolbar. Lets say after I leave the Pale Moon Forums site and I want to go to the Mint Forums site, on my Bookmarks Toolbar I will left click on my Linux folder there which contains 21 linux bookmarks and when it opens, I will left click on the Mint Forums bookmark at the link below which takes me there.
https://forums.linuxmint.com/
Since you are having a lot of problems with Pale Moon running in Mint 22 especially when having many tabs open and then having problems with Pale Moon viewing one YouTube video with a low 480 resolution which is quite blurry in my opinion, you might need to think about making a new clean profile without any bookmarks, custom things you've done with Pale Moon, not using any extensions, etc.
Then go to YouTube, view a video in at least 1080 resolution and see if your CPU spikes and I am going to guess your CPU will not spike. If your CPU does not spike, then it is something in your old profile which is causing you severe problems.
Then start loading things back until the your CPU starts to spike. BTW, when you create a new profile, it does not delete your old profile. The new profile lets you start fresh like a portrait painter with a blank canvas. This may seem drastic to you, but it beats re-installing Mint and starting all over.
One last item, I am not a power user in linux. I am a non-technical person who knows enough about the linux distros I use not to get myself into trouble which covers the distro's settings, it's programs and the three browsers (Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox) I use in each distro.

Off-topic:
I use 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2) in three distros which I use everyday and they are Mint, MX Linux and Debian. All of them are with the Xfce desktop environment. Sometimes I will go to Distrowatch and I will look for a linux distro with Xfce and put it on a USB stick so I can play around with it in "Live" mode.
I've played with many different linux distros such as Linux Lite, SolydX, Mint, MX Linux, Debian, Manjaro, Spiral Linux, Sparky Linux, Peppermint, just to name a few, to see how linux Pale Moon works in these distros. Pale Moon does not give me any problems. I get my 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2) at only one place and that is at the link below. I do not go to any other place.
https://www.palemoon.org/download.shtml
And "trava90" (Travis) has done an excellent job maintaining linux Pale Moon.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
OK, I think i have found my particular issue, the browser behaviour was replicating similar previous issues regarding rise in cpu usage, swap file and memory usage leading to stutteri ng browserr with delays and then forced closes. This only came about as I had upgraded to Linux Mint 22 AND also downloaded the tarball file and unpacked then run Palemoon from there instead of installing a package..So here is what i did.
The requirements listed for Pm to run on Linux are listed as:
GTK 2.24 or GTK 3.22+, depending on which version you download. GTK4 is not supported.
GLib 2.56 or higher
Pango 1.42 or higher
libstdc++ 4.6.1 or higher
not knowing how to find this info, spent some time reading. Eventually found that by opening terminal and typing the command " ldd --version" reported back ldd (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.39-0ubuntu8.3) 2.39
not knowing how to, or whether to try to get a newer version of Glib, decided to give the .deb install files a go that were recently created as listed in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=65&t=31410
The manual install instruction at https://kannegieser.net/palemoon/ was initially confusing....this is what i found was needed to get it to work because i stumbled across some errors in terminal which led to the simple method really needed by the unexperienced.in linux (me):
Create /etc/apt/sources.list.d/palemoon.list by:
Open Terminal then enter:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/palemoon.list
which will create the palemoon.list file in the nano app, all that is needed is to copy and paste which version to obtain from the list
deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/veit@kannegieser.net.gpg] https://kannegieser.net/palemoon avx2_gtk3 main
save the file - nano will save the entry within the palemoon.list file - simplest way to do it otherwise is a directory area needing permissions knowledge
next in terminal enter:
sudo -s
sudo wget https://kannegieser.net/palemoon/veit@k ... er.net.gpg -O /usr/share/keyrings/veit@kannegieser.net.gpg
apt-get update
apt-get install palemoon
Now this actually installs palemoon with the required dependencies.
Having now been to youtube and flicked through around 10 videos quickly, the problems have vanished. The lesson i learned is that:
yes the tarball files can be used to install palemoon but problems arise as i have found if not all the correct dependencies are already on the system.
The same symptoms were also showing up whether i used the latest or older version PM tarball files.
issue solved.
cheers

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
glib is not glibc
glibc is a core C runtime library. It provides things like printf(3) and fopen(3).
glib is an object-based event loop and utility library written in C.
gnulib is a library that provides an adapter from the POSIX API to the native API.
All three are used for completely different tasks.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
There's no reason to "install" Pale Moon in Linux. I extract the "palemoon" folder from the tarball to my Templates folder (in Home folder), and created a panel shortcut to it. That's a lot easier than following the "install" directions.
Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
I suspect that their Linux system just didn't have good versions of system libraries installed, requiring the 'install" method outlined. On most installations that wouldn't be necessary as most distros have all common libraries of a sufficient type and version available.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
I have been doing the above way too. But I put the extracted "palemoon" folder in a different folder in my Thunar File Manager which is part of the Xfce desktop enviromnent. Works in Mint, MX Linux and Debian and all the other distros I've experimented with which use the Xfce desktop environment
I have been doing it this way since January of 2014 when linux Pale Moon was first publicly released.
Linux Mint 22 (Wilma) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
MX Linux 23.4 (Libretto) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 12.8 (Bookworm) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
Hi, yes i did the same way with tarball too and this is where the problem came about and suspected it was a library issue. This has been a good exercise to learn a little bit about linux and to get a solution.Moonchild wrote: ↑2024-09-07, 18:32I suspect that their Linux system just didn't have good versions of system libraries installed, requiring the 'install" method outlined. Glad you figured it out and learned something -- there's a reason why I have a certain quote in my signature at the moment

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
When it comes to Mint 22 and Pale Moon, there are "no missing/good" system libraries to be able to use Pale Moon when Pale Moon is installed or not installed and it also does not matter whether one chooses the GTK2 or GTK3 tarballs.
But I will say, in my opinion, it is easier to use Pale Moon when it is not installed using the Xfce desktop environment. Just add a launcher, create the path to the laucher and using Pale Moon's image files to create the launcher to use the Pale Moon logo.
There are a few users on the Mint forums site which use Pale Moon and their Pale Moon is installed in Mint 22 and they had no problems installing Pale Moon. They did not run into any missing libraries either.
The OP has stated he (or she) knows Pale Moon works in Mint 22 when it is not installed. But the OP wants Pale Moon to be "installed".
Then, in my opinion, he (or she) started to tinker around using the Terminal to install Pale Moon. Tinkering around using the Terminal is a disaster waiting to happen and that disaster's name is......"Murphy's Law". And the OP has run into Murphy.

BTW; I use the same method to use, at this time, Waterfox in Mint 22 Xfce, MX Linux 23.3 Xfce, Debian 12.7 Xfce where Waterfox is "not" installed in these three linux distros. Again, no missing libraries either in these three distros.

Re: Linux Mint 22 and Palemoon
Hey lads hope all is going good.
yes i see Palemoon works ok in the xfce environment.
Am using LM22 cinnamon...
This laptop - is an ok spec, https://www.gigabyte.com/Laptop/G5--2023/sp#sp
i7-12650H Processor 4.7 GHz (24MB Cache, up to 4.7 GHz, 6 P-cores and 4 E- cores)
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4050 Laptop GPU 6GB GDDR6
memory 2x DDR5 Slots (DDR5-4800) 16g
Hdd: 1tb https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/kc3000- ... tate-drive
i have the previous model laptop which has an intermittent hardware issue but still goes ok. It is running previous version of Linux mint and Pm 33.1.1 which from memory was the last install i did with Steven Pusers file and install guide, works all good with ublock as well. For many years I have used the bookmarks toolbar for most of the sites i visit, works great, often have some 10 to 20 tabs open no problem.
So, with fairly new hardware, i put a new hdd in just to setup LM22. Apart from a stock standard install, all i changed was the DNS server and took out Thunderbird and replaced with Evolution mail client. At this point i then looked at how am i going to install Palemoon fresh.....I appreciate the efforts of Steven Puser for previous versions but they are not currently active i think, this led to ok lets get the Tarball and work with that. Now this is the learning curve. On the download page yes i can get the files, what is not crystal clear is would I choose a GTK2 or GTK3 version...so search those terms and look those up choose a file. ok What do i do with it now as on the download page there are no install guide....so went searching for using tarball files and how to make the desktop links as i did not know this before....that led to my post with the link i found that was a simple guide on what to do as it worked. This approach is from a fresh set of eyes on an install
PM 33.3.0 at this point worked all good except for one thing - playing youtube video with out issue - its not critical for me to have but wanted to problem solve it. Looking through the file tree, i did in fact take pm out of all directories including the .cache directory and tried previous versions of PM using the tarball and older archives with the same issue arising with or without adblock installed. So my thinking was - is there something partucular with LM22 cinnamon that may be a cause, so i began looking up the required specs (as posted above). I thought i had solved the issue but no, next morning on fresh boot, as soon as a youtube video started playing the same symptom of lag and non responsiveness came about, so too did force close. I added ublock and same issue, took out ublock totally and still the same.
So i pondered whether there would be any difference from a tarball install or a .deb install. So starting a fresh install of PM i did have a good look at the recently created .deb files and posted above what i found was needed to have an error free install from the terminal and it works. Same error with youtube came about. I have enjoyed the exercise.
So....This is a learning curve from my perspective, not pointing and blaming but doing and learning....which is good. Before i nuke this install and do the whole OS reinstall i will take notes of what the requirements are needed for PM to run and compare with what libraries this machine actually has.....was there a fault at install time, was there user error and so on are all plausible. The curiosity I have is simply, as seen in previous posts, only when youtube begins to play media does there show a marked rise in cpu usage over and above what i know to actually be normal, a rise in swap usage and memory, lag and force close issues. ..so i will explore, right or wrong, is it an install error, or is it a library or other issue to solve and simply work it out.
cheers
