What is going on with userstyles.org?

Post by back2themoon » 2024-04-11, 21:14

(intentionally not created in Web Compatibility Support)

So, this website is directly linked with Stylish. For years, it has been slower than a disabled turtle. Sometimes it didn't work at all. I've decided to pay a visit today, to check available updates for some styles I use with Stylem.

Pale Moon: Blank page (so I'm thinking it doesn't work again - no surprises here)
Firefox: Blank page
Edge: Oops - officially uninstalled (thanks to the EU)
Brave: Oh dear... it opens instantly, with a nauseous redesign.

I don't even know if the styles available there are still compatible with Pale Moon/Stylem and if it's possible to download them. Their "Show CSS" button doesn't seem to produce anything.

Icing on the cake:

Works with PM 33.0.1

Code: Select all

general.useragent.override.userstyles.org = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/70.0.3538.77 Safari/537.36
(same value as general.useragent.override.web.whatsapp.com)

Thanks Kris_88. That makes the website appear again, but I'm afraid they've made the whole thing Chrome-only and it looks useless for Pale Moon. Nothing can be installed or downloaded. They specifically say their Chrome extension is required.

Looking it up a bit, there have been major privacy concerns in the past with Stylish/userstyles.org. Stylus is the recommended alternative for Firefox and it led me to this website, containing a safe UserStyles.org Archive and other websites which should be useful for Pale Moon/Stylem, too:

Atexor wrote:(November 2023) Guys, if you have issues with userstyles.org (which is really bugged recently I suggest to avoid it due to recent privacy issues), just try to use site "uso-archive" which grabbed all styles from there https://uso.kkx.one/
All styles are converted to openstyles format used by Stylus. Let the userstyles.org die.

I'll have to research more on this. Some recommend switching to greasyfork.org but that is for userscripts only, and I don't know if they are equally capable on website styling, combined with the fairly old Greasemonkey for Pale Moon version).

As an example, I tried the Wikipedia Deep Dark Theme, v.1.1.0 from userstyles.world. I had a previous version installed, from userstyles.org.

Pressing the Install button does not make Lootyhoof's Stylem install it automatically, but the CSS code appears instead. Copying and simply replacing the code in Stylem is simple, and the newer style version works fine.

So, there is still a lot to explore. Just not in userstyles.org.
