When I first got on the internet in 1994, the very notion of my computer (at my cousin's office, actually) was connected to others across the world was fascinating, and I used to look at the Netscape statusbar messages (contacting server, 4K transferred etc). This became an ingrained habit which was why I detested Firefox 4's statusbar removal and switched to Seamonkey, until the infamous XUL deprecation announcement when I discovered Pale Moon. So always looking at the target of a link will show if it's pointing off-site to somewhere shady.
