Is 32.2.0 crashing for anyone else?

Unread post by LuftWafflePilot » 2023-05-17, 12:26

I have updated PM earlier today, and it has already crashed twice. No error popup or anything, it just disappeared.
I think both crashed happened when I left the PC for a while.
There is an useless looking crash report in Eventlog:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: palemoon.exe, version: 6.2.0.8535, time stamp: 0x64621732

Is this happening for anyone else?
I don't remember PM ever crashing on me before.

Nope, not for me.
Ive had Pale moon running on 16 hours a day after updating with no problems.
I’m running Linux mint though..
It is common to think of our own time as standing at the apex of civilisation from which the deficiencies of preceding ages may patronisingly be viewed in the light of what is assumed to be progress. The reality is that in the long perspective of history the present century will not hold an enviable position unless the second half is to redeem its first.

I am on Windows 10.
And it has just crashed again :(
I don't even use any special addons, just Copyplaintext, Session manager and Ublock origin. Of course, this starting to happen right after updating makes me suspicious, but what do I know...

No issues for Pale Moon on all three Linux installs I have running in the house.

Seems to be a Windows issue?

Can you try capturing a crash dump?

Just running. Will post here later. The crashes seem to be completely random.

P.S. The debugging tool is now the modern type of app (yuck), so when you feel like it, you might adjust the instructions to avoid any potential confusion.

If it's of any use, the debugger threw a warning about something right as it launched PM:

I know nothing of such logs, but isn't "7B1280606b-2510-4fe0-97ef-9b5a22eafe30" going to be Session Manager?

So disable it - or even run entirely in Safe Mode for a long enough period of time that you're able to say, "hey, I'm not crashing".

And actually better then that, would be to create a new, clean test Profile, & run that - unaltered for a long enough time that you can say, "hey, 32.2.0 is not crashing any more".

(And do backup, first.)

I could do that, but since I've been using that addon for years with no crashes, I doubt it's the culprit. It is horribly outdated though and I do need a replacement, but I'm afraid there is none :( Without it I have to rely on daily disk backups to grab the sessionstore file from in case of a crash/unexpected power down/BSOD or whatever.
I also did plan to create a new profile too, because I've been expecting pretty annoying microscopic stuttering (like when typing or scrolling) in the past several weeks.

It's just that random freezes right after an update look way too suspicious, and I felt like troubleshooting it right now makes just as much sense.

Also, what do you know - I installed the debugger, and damn thing refuses to crash.

No crashes here. Also using Session Manager, amongst many others.

Sometimes, especially after recent updates, bad security software can cause things like this. This includes Windows Defender. Are you using any? Try disabling it or add a full exception for Pale Moon as a test.

Far as I can tell from the crash address this occurs in the garbage collector (considering my assumption this was the 64-bit binary) in a helper function (MustSkipMarking) but without a crash dump I can't see which of the involved objects/arguments/pointers might be null or protected.

For the record I've not seen any crashes on release builds on Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 64-bit. It's all been smooth sailing.

The thing just refuses to crash now that I've been running PM under the debugger. Meh. I even re-enabled Session Manager and it's still going.
Anyway, a few observations that might or might not be useful for anything, related to the crashes or not:

Upon initial load, the debugger says (I posted this before):
(the address or whatever it is reporting is always the same btw)

Code: Select all

ntdll!LdrpDoDebuggerBreak+0x30:

Then, even though Session Manager is disabled, the console still shows errors related to it.
This makes no sense, but what do I know.
Most of the errors are probably only related to the addon, but just in case they point to anything suspicious, here's the output as well:

The last thing that seemed weird was when I changed a tab position. The debugger filled a page with stuff like this:

Code: Select all

onecore\com\combase\dcomrem\resolver.cxx(2299)\combase.dll!00007FFCD327E3BD: (caller: 00007FFCD327B2AE) ReturnHr(7) tid(36dc) 80040154 Class not registered
All of this is simply stuff that I understand about as much as nuclear physics, and even though it's most probably not relevant to what the topic is, any error or warning might potentially be useful I guess...

I'm on Linux, and there have been a few crashes for me. There was even a site that reliably crashed for me, but I forgot what it was, unfortunately. Last time I had crashes, no one else could reproduce them, so I didn't bother reporting this one. But it seems like this one isn't just me, so I'll post a report next time I see a crash.

I got a crash or two during my pre-release testing which I was unable to track down or reproduce. However, other than the crashes reported on the forums that we have been tracking down and fixing... I have not crashed since the release. Considering how much code churn there was in this release though, the stability is rather remarkable.
