I'm interested too in how athenian200 was able to use Messenger on Pidgin. Last time I tried to use Messenger on bitlbee so that I can use it on my IRC client, it just locks out my FB account. :\

Local clients let me filter my spam more than the sites allow. I use two inboxes: my personal and academic accounts. My university will not allow me to opt out of their meaningless newsletters about sports, appearances in the news and so on. Posteo, my personal inbox, does not mark newsletters or the like as spam, and adding manual filters would yield a list too long, yet failing to shut everything out. Bogofilter makes my life simpler.

How do you do that? It doesn't list Messenger in the list of supported accounts when I try to add a new one. And now Google has turned off their XMPP transport so Google Chat no longer works either :(

The binaries they list on their page are a bit out of date, but this project has a working Facebook libpurple plugin. You have to jump through a few hoops to use it, but it can be made to work. I've thought about creating a standard libpurple wrapper for UXP so I could integrate it into Epyrus as a replacement for whatever library Mozilla used before, but I doubt anything like that has been done before.

But yeah, basically the built-in Facebook functionality is busted, and you have to install an alternate Facebook plugin that is designed for Facebook's current protocol rather than XMPP. They just try to tweak it to keep things working and it's missing a lot of features, but they've managed somehow.

I was suspecting that's the same libpurple plugin used by bitlbee, and I'm right it seems. Maybe I will try using this plugin again and see if it no longers locks me out...

Just curious though, do you have 2FA in your FB account enabled? It could be the one that's causing issues for me.
