Pale Moon forum

for my old IBM Thinkpad R31 I searched for the palemoon XP/Atom 24.3 and 25.x binaries, but though I searched high and low across the whole Internet I couldn't find them. Does anybody have them anywhere? Thanks.

Running those would be exceedingly dangerous and giving them to you specifically would be intentionally irresponsible. Buy a new computer or install linux.

Wow, that is one ancient device! How is it even usable on the modern web? Where Pale Moon is concerned, I wonder if it even supports SSE2 for starters and that's a requirement for Pale Moon.

And I thought my Core 2 Duo desktop from 2008(2 GB RAM, nVidia 8600 GT) was old.

R31 is perfectly usable on the web but I rule out the heavily ad-networked and javascript frameworks packed CPU & RAM hunter sites disguising themselves as 'web'

Actually I already use a browser on this machine and it works perfectly fine: K-Meleon-76.2G (Jan 2020 build)
The reason I'd like to have the Palemoon too is because I have a version of each major browser running on this computer, like the FF 52.9, Opera 12.18, Chrome and Tor BB so I wanted to have the Palemoon too.

From the system requirements, you need a CPU with SSE2 support at the minimum - so the Pentium III is ruled out.

Apparently you didn't search "high and low" across Pale Moon's own web site.

Go to the Archived versions page (navigate to it via the menu bar on the main web site).
Once there, scroll down to the section under "Download older versions from alternate locations" where you'll find links to where the versions you want are stored.

Okey, I would still like to try the binary whether the R31's CPU supported or not or whether this try will be in vain or not. The problem is, there are no palemoon-24.3-Atom-XP.zip binaries as separately downloadable files on the Internet.

Yes, I did search the Pale Moon's web site of course page and I did come across that link. But it's a 3.6GB file and so I refused to download it. I don't think it's reasonable to download a huge file just to get a 20MB big binary.

Please consider not doing this. Not only do you risk yourself by having a known vulnerable web client, you also risk other users on the Internet.
Do I need to remind you of the problem with compromised machines being botnets in China because they were running terribly-outdated web browsers (MSIE6)? This is something similar.

So you're ruling out 90% of the websites available today

I strongly suggest you stick with K-Meleon in favor of using an ancient Pale Moon version.

Also, archive.org allows you to drill down into that file to grab the binary you want.

I didn't know that archive.org published the binaries separately as there was only one big download option there. After your comment I ve noticed the 'show all' link and there you have it:

As for the current status of the web, most of the websites today are literally ad networks, google analytics agents, JS and CSS framework contraptions, whatever... Luckily there are still some real websites, like the Wikipedia, or gnu.org or archive.org...

If you want to use Windows XP, there are a few forks of this project that still run on that platform, that are usually geared to older machines without SSE2. While I don't recommend using them and don't wish to provide links, they exist and probably do what you want. This forum is geared towards more modern versions of Windows, and if you really want to tinker with ancient hardware and versions of Windows, there are places where people do that.

However, it's worth noting you could make a small profit selling your computer as a vintage laptop for gamers and enterprises that desperately need 100% backwards compatibility, and use some of that money to buy a newer Core 2 Duo-era laptop. There's still a legitimate use for Pentium III-era hardware, but it's not on the Internet. Your R31 as an older Thinkpad machine would sell for more on eBay as a vintage machine than a Core 2-era machine would as something that's obsolete but not yet trendy.

That is actually a really good point. Old PIII hardware is popular because a good number of programs can't be emulated well and need vintage hardware, as well as the whole "we need to maintain this 2 decade old industry complex with native hardware compatible programs" which requires bare-metal hardware of the era to develop against.
