Reliable Email providers? (2025 update)

Unread post by back2themoon » 2025-01-24, 18:53

Hello everyone,

As a continuation of the older similar thread, perhaps some updated information on alternative, privacy-conscious Email providers may be of help.

I seem to remember recent reports about some providers, not having Pale Moon-friendly Web interfaces or not working at all with Epyrus and SMTP. These are both essential "features".

I'll throw in another question. How do these providers deal with contacts on mobile devices? I guess they can import Google Contacts for example, but what happens when you want to add new ones? Do they offer their own apps?

Let us know of your friendly, favourite Email providers - paid or otherwise. Thanks.

I run my own server and for mail I recommend using SMTP/IMAP.

Contacts/Calendar can be done with CalDAV/CardDAV.

Good providers have that.
IIRC posteo provides all of them.

Does look like a good provider, thanks for mentioning it.

disroot, it has free tier (1gb for non-commercial use) but manual approval for account (could take several days).

I love my Disroot account, so easy to set up in any client or to use the webmail in Pale Moon. But don't you have to get invited to even try to register for an account? I can't recall exactly how I got my account, but I think they're kind of rare.

No invite but you need to request approval.

Thanks for your input, both Posteo and Disroot look excellent.

I think Tuta (ex Tutanota) has problems with Pale Moon. How about Proton Mail?

Proton seems to be 100% functional.

I use fastmail, and it works with Pale Moon.

Thanks, that's an interesting alternative - even though their main website isn't displayed correctly in Pale Moon (not a great start).

Their web mail page seems different however (https://app.fastmail.com/) and hopefully works fine, as you said.

Yeah, Tuta is just endlessly trying to log-in and open for me on Pale Moon right now. I haven't tried to use it for awhile, have to play around with it and see if its even working on other browsers or what the problem is. Previously it would log-in but not allow you to read your mails, but can't finish logging-in right now.

tutanota seems to be garbage last I checked.

Disroot, protonmail, posteo.de are all good ones.

Two out of those three can use imap without trouble. Proton, however requires software for imap.

I've been using paid mailbox.org for several years now, very happy with it. I have it set up for POP3 & SMTP in Interlink (which I really should migrate from since it has been abandoned), but sometimes I use their webmail and it works fine.
