There's a fundamental difference. single-entity social media (Twitter/X, Facebook, etc.) at least give the user the control which content they have access to and want to see
To be fair, twitter, facebook and similar, have monetary stake in the game and steer people deliberately towards certain topics. More engagement means people see more ads and more data collection.
So I am not sure I agree there.

At least that is how I understood it.
Well that''s fair, you don't use it so maybe that is why you see it that way.
Me using it and having used it I do see some echo chamber, but I doubt twitter is any better, I have heard really bad things about it even before elon took over.
Actually, I recall seeing a thread that was mega toxic on twitter regarding a situation I would rather not speak of. If I told you, I would never be able to shut up xD.
Although, I don't know if you count youtube comments as a social media, but I have seen much toxicity there in my own experience.

So it's actually failing in the "federation" part if everyone clamps down on what is allowed through the exchanges
This part I will give you props to. Yes, they do restrict certain speech probably more than facebook. Twitter however, probably less but it depends on topic and each individual case.
