Flash plugin doesn't work

Unread post by JoeyG » 2018-05-27, 16:39

I know Flash is a red flag for lots of people, but I just want to mention that using 28.0.0a2, I'm not able to get the plugin to work on this page from my own website.
https://www.edu-net.net/media/balcony/

I can't even get it to work with a brand-new profile.

Warning if you get it to work: It's a movie of my cats!!!

You can tell that there's blocked mixed content by the shield that appears to the left of the identity box in the urlbar.
If you click that shield, it offers the opportunity to temporarily allow the blocked content.

My sincere thanks to one and all - both for the technical info as well as for the compliments about "the boys".

DO NOT do this. It will disable mixed-mode script blocking on all websites which is a massive security hole.

Thanks. I wasn't planning to do it anyway.

However, you still have not fixed the issue on your page and the flash object is still loaded from http, which forces visitors to make dangerous security exceptions.

Thank you for your observation.

I'll offer a short reply and then a longer one.

Short reply
I'll get around to it one of these days, God willing.

(If you're in a hurry, you can stop reading now; you won't miss anything Earthshaking. ;) )

Longer reply
(1) I actually know how to do the necessary HTML5 web programming -> https://www.edu-net.net/media/html5/ (Warning: another CAT movie!!!)

(2) Although edu-net.net is "on the internet", and is thus available to the public, it's nowadays really only a personal website. It's non-commercial, gathers no data (personal or otherwise), and is not advertised in any way - i.e., any external visitors (i.e. people besides my wife, my friends, and me) to the site are either "directed" there by me personally (as in this thread), or they land there somehow of their own accord. In this sense, I feel I don't really "force" anyone to do anything.

On the technical side of the discussion, having learned (from the people who've kindly responded to this thread) the meaning of the little "shield" icon to the left of the URI, I personally don't feel that clicking it and selecting to unblock the page really represents a "dangerous security exception". There's nothing on the page besides the video of our cats. The only real "danger" that I can see is to my wife and me in that someone might find them so nice that she or he decides to come to Berlin and tries to steal them.

In closing, I'm not in any way, shape, or form attempting to dilute the general significance of what you've kindly brought to my attention. Actually, it's about time I dump Flash anyway, and in a first step in this direction, I've got a pure .mp4 version of the cat movie online for the viewing pleasure of anyone who doesn't want to run the Flash page: https://www.edu-net.net/media/balcony01.mp4. And for real gluttons for punishment, there's even a longer movie of the boys on the balcony -> https://www.edu-net.net/media/balcony02.mp4.

Again my thanks to everyone who's responded to this thread.

Hi JoeyG,

I think you misunderstood what Justoff was trying to say: Mixed content refers to mixing secure (https) and insecure (http) requests on the same web page. Your web page is served securely (https). However, the flash file and video url that are given to your flash file are *not* secure. If you look at your web page's source, the urls in the embed portion are insecure (http); just be sure to change them to secure (https) links and you'll be all set! No need to worry about flash vs. HTML5 stuff at this point.

Also, I'm not a cat person, but those are pretty cats. Are they Bengal Cats?
